i'm kinda blown away when i even hear of guys adding different parts of the drums in a different order than i do. i always start w/ the kick...saw a vid of Thes One (people under the stairs, etc.) showing how he builds a beat...he starts with the hi-hat, then snare, adds the kicks last.

i know it sounds ridiculous, but i was knocked sideways by that. never even occured to me.

I start most of my 303 beats with hi-hat, snare then kick.

i always start with hats for a hip-hop beat
put a bit of movement into them and treat it like a funky metronome

jeez, loox like i'm the only dude starting w/ the kicks. no big deal, obviously, but pretty interesting.

speaking of alias & anticon, there's a new odd nosdam album out this month. what i've heard is good - sort of an extension from 2005's "the burner" (tho maybe not as good...that rekkid is pretty dope).

anticon are nice but it's there fans that ruin them for me personally.

the alias & ehren album is one of my favorite albums of all time , i've yet to hear anything that comes close to the complexity and feel of the album

same can be said for the project with tarsier

everyone says muted is his finest work, but i think it has it's moments, the lillian and brookland oaklyn albums are it for me.

i do wish he'd rap again, but the instrumentals he's been producing have brough smilies to my face many a times.

i also agree with the comment about the fans

a lot of people who listen to anticon have that whole "im better than you because the artist i listen to are smarter than the artist you listen to" sort of complex.

Anticon's teh shit. :o They (especially Sole) first got me into the hip hop thing and showed me that there's more honest and deep shit out there than I ever expected before. Name who you want, Alias, Jel, Nosdam, DoseOne, Why?, Dosh... they're all like little kings in their realms.

I like how Alias works with as much people as he can from like all over the planet but the one he put out with Tarsier doesn't touch me that much, I just don't feel her voice. But Lillian on the other hand might be under my most played records, yeah. His way to tweak the drums to sound so - I don't even know how to call it - and then arrange them in his chracteristic style is near-genius to me.

You guys ever heard 13&God, that project of Themselves with The Notwist from Germany?

I always start with the drums. I usually play all the drums together for more of a live feel.

same for me

i usually play the kick and snare together and then add the hats.

although after watching peeps on youtube and reading online ive been doing it by doing the snare first, then adding the kick. but playing the kick and snare just seems more natural for me.
