Ok, I am well aware of the SP-606's shortcomings (4-track sequencer, etc) vs. the MPC1000. However, I have a few questions for those who have used both.

I was wondering if the SP-606 allows you to stack samples ala the Akai MPC1000. For instance...Can I take 4 different bass drums or snares drums and stack them on top of each other on one pad? Does the SP-606 allow you to do this or would it have to be done via resampling? Also, how is the sound quality vs an MPC?

I'm looking at getting another sampling drum machine. By the way, I like the SP-404, but didn't like the 1 track sequencer... the SP-606 fixes this problem. The SP-606 is cheap on ebay so...I'm interested.

yes you can stack samples on one pad, up to four. you just can't tune them.

lack of sample tuning is what keeps me from buying a 606. I wish someone would hack the OS :)

despite its faults, the 606 is still a dope machine though, imo...

I like how the 606 has 'shortcomings' when the MPC sounds so anorexic. How many tracks to cats need to make a song these days? I started with an Amiga computer so I feel spoilt with my 606. Remember you can trigger another four phrases along with the four-tracks, giving you eight at once. You do not want more than eight loops playing at the same time, especially ones as fat as the sp makes!

It's not all about loops... it's about a sound per track...so when mixing to your DAW you can effect and mix each sound seperately... makes things easier. Also, the past is the past. I started out with a taperecorder...but that doesn't make me want to use it for the rest of my life. The MPC is not anorexic...if it is, you are not using it right. The key though is that both machines are different and have their pluses.

The MPC sounds thin because it does not have any decent filters or effects. I mean, a 2 pole filter? pffft. Unbalanced output? pretty funny for a 'pro' product. And those pads, don't get me started....Ever wondered why there's so many posts on the forums about Broken Pads? It's because they are so crappy ypu need to hit 'em with a hammer to get 'em to work properly, and so they eventually break. The 606 pads, on their LOWEST sensitivity, are still more sensitive than an MPC....Using an MPC now days is living in the past, as it's only strength is sequencing beats, which can be done in any DAW, so where's the need for it? The 606 goes above and beyond what the DAW software can do by, to quote Sound on Sound magazine, "forcing the user to think differently about the way they make music".

At the end of the day the SP sounds big and fat; the akai only sounds old.

i think mpc 1000 has a nice boom to it and its crunchy, i dont even think they can be compared. using the mpcs tuning with the sp's fx can make some crazy shit , yah. !!

If you're a good producer and understand the fundamentals of sound design then you can make a dope track with the record, pause, play, record tape method, so it really just comes down to what machine gets your ideas to flow, I've used everything from mpcs to pro tools to fruity loops and liked the beats I've made with each but after taking a solid year to learn my sp-303, I personally find that it just makes me happier and more creative.

I used to own a 2k. Its the best sequencer ive ever used. but I would never use it for ne thing aside from that :) Its got cool features... but the sound leaves much to be desired. especially in the low end.
