Who out there uses a guitar or bass........trumpet or harmonica, ect, ect...... some type of instrument in their beats? How do you use it in your beats?

Yesterday my brother bought an electric guitar & brought it over last night. I haven't had that much fun in a long time. I used to play a little guitar, but never got that into it....it's been 15 years since I played.

We hooked it up to different guitar pedals, both of us only know a few notes & chords.....but we were able to record like 3 hours of great material to chop up.

I was surprised on the variety of sounds we were able to get out of an electric guitar & guitar pedals (Zoom G3 & Boss Me-50). It's a cheap electric guitar too....

I have a harmonica, xylophone, shakers, thumb piano, just small stuff.....been building up a little arsenal.......next I'm getting a bass.......

I made a beat using the thumb piano as the melody, my brothers beat boxing for the drums, added a shaker & some stick sounds (?? 2 wood stick things you tap together, I really like the sound) & had my brother "hum" some notes for the bass. It actually turned out really good. Made another beat using only sounds my brother could make with his mouth (beat boxing for drums, sang the melody, hummed the bass & chopped up his rapping/vocals).

It would be cool to discuss.......anyone have any tips & tricks with respects to using instruments in your beats? Anything you plan on getting?

Nice idea for a thread,Sharris .

I played the Bass Guitar on this, the last track I recorded, which I combined with some Double Bass and Synth Bass samples .

It was the first time I've picked up a bass in years but I was at my friends house recording in his small home studio and the bass was propped up in the corner so i just thought fuck it , why not ?

I also play and build acoustic guitars as a hobby and im also in the process of cutting sheet metal soundboards for a couple of single cone resonator guitars i've been constructing in my spare time, albeit slowly.

I would really like to incorporate some acoustic stuff into my tracks even if just just simple stuff like single notes or chords.

I'll definitely be recording with more real instruments soon though as I have time booked for May and June in a really nice studio which has some awesome gear..SSL desk , baby grand piano ,drum kit & Pro Tools etcetera.

I'm gonna be recording for a really cool label I've been approached by, but I'm not allowed to say who they are.....yet !

I'm fucking stoked and ready to go to say the least about this... :D

Anyhoo.. here's the track I played the bass guitar parts on.

I'm going to listen when I get home from work....your other tracks too! I was gonna listen to your other tracks last night but my bro came over & I never pass up jammin with him.... when we get together to make beats & play it's a great vibe, we always have a blast & easily inspire each other :)

& that's awesome that you build acoustic guitars as a hobby! & recording in a nice studio....I've never even been in one.....that would be awesome, plus to use the gear! If you record any beats from it I would love to hear.

I've been incorporating acoustic stuff in my tracks, but just a little here & there...few notes & chords or little hits.......add effects & chop it all up........I've been getting more into it. My fav thing to do is experiment. & what's cool is you don't have to fully know how to play the instrument when you have a sampler & some effects..... we made a lot of crazy sounds last night. Plus we recorded 1 note or chord at a time......just have to chop it up & bam. Can make great melodies from a guitar without even knowing how to play it. & it gets me motivated to actually learn how to play.

Congratulations on getting to record with a label you like, that's a dream for many beat makers!

https://soundcloud.com/calltheforest/ft ... t-emotions I played the bass and the guitar on this one. The only pain of using this kind of string instrument is that they have to be in good condition. Both my bass and guitar are with the octaves kinda fucked up and sounding out of tone when put togheter or with synths XD.

I think playing instruments yourself adds a emotional relationship with what you are composing and at least for me, having the instrument at my hand always leads me to be able to express more then I would be capable if I was just using the computer. I got bored of chopping at the computer and kinda ended swamped by this feeling of "man, I don't want to do this anymore" and stopped making beats for a while now. I'm just using a keyboard that I have to compose new songs and when I feel that I have something I start to use Ableton (and it always get it to the next level, but just when I come with a idea already written down).

You were talking about having real synths on another topic, Sharris... I think it kinda translates the same to guitars, basses and whatever. There are people who enjoy the material thing XD I'm already too abstract in whatever I do... so, this physical instruments are kinda my gateway to some organization on the whole process. I discovered it after this burnout like three or four months ago.

Danswift, man, acoustic guitars are the coolest... Here in brazil we usually have the nylon ones, I love the song of these things. I already had two, both got stolen lol... I'm looking to buy another one. And also, congrats for the invite! Your beats are amazing.

Thanks Sharris.

Theres gonna be an EP type of thing getting recorded at the studio sessions..I've been working on a lot of ideas and sketches over the last few months and have about 10 tapes worth of stuff that all the material will be taken from...all of the music is about 95% done so its just a case of getting everything recorded properly now .

That Dynamite track is :!: Reminds me of dj shadow, but with a twist.....
a twist of danswift
saw him live a few times.....first time was in 2001.... was really into his shit when i first got turntables, like 97 98...whenever entroducing came out. The drums in that album blew my mind. I never heard chopped drum rhythms like that before.

Really like your beat too forest! Thats the shit im talkin about... that guitar & bass sound so good! Nice vibe, like DSwift said.

It would be cool to hear something with the subphatty Thesisdrs.....would be cool if you posted a beat with it in the mix. It sounds amazing in all the demos ive heard... is it over powering in a mix? Or somewhat easy to tame?

I used to play sax in band.....only 4th - 6th grade...pawned it in my early 20's for bad stuff  It would be cool to hear some sax in a boombap/hiphop type beat

My brother & I made a beat using some of the guitar stuff we recorded. Again, neither of us know how to play guitar. The main melody & backing melody are from his guitar. My brother made the drum beat, I added bass & arranged the beat (we do alot of collab's), we didn't put that much time into it, that's something I'm trying to work on (putting more time into beats, especially transitions & "sprinkles"). I'm def going to use instruments A LOT more in my beats. It was a lot of fun to make!

Wow! That's the difference of actually knowing how to play guitar & not knowing (my beat) :) I like how you use 'found sounds' as well, like the baby & not sure what that was in JonEs, sounded kind of like a turntable arm returning or something.... it's a familiar sound but can't pinpoint it....really like it tho.

& thanks man! I had a guitar many years ago, but only had it a few months.... it was a crazy time in my life, so I barely learned how to play & forgot it all. Wanted to show even if you don't know how to play an instrument you can still incorporate them in your beats...... & it's been a fun way to learn how to play.

It's surprising how many sounds you can get out of a guitar & some effects!

To me it sounds like the tape deck when it would switch directions to play the B side. That Lucid Dreams song just flows, great song asha c.

sharris, your comment of knowing and not knowing how to play I believe is irrelevant and you prove that with your beat above. Music is subjective to the listener and I personally like that repetitive slow build and change style in your song.

The only thing I would recommend would be some sort of vocal, or screwed (slowed down) lyrics to run with the song. But again that is my own personal taste.

Also, that new banner on your music page looks awesome. Those flowers look like coral reefs.

yes I think it was tape deck I cant remember for certain though!
Thanks glad you liked the track!
@sharris I agree that a bit of variation is good, maybe just record a couple of different loops/phrases/instrument sounds and have them as a seperate "part".
