I was very excited to get an SP404sx for xmas and I started using it immediately. The problem was when I tried to record a sample from both my phone or my laptop, many samples are extremely quiet and muffled, especially voices and people talking (however it occurs with normal music files bought from iTunes as well, seeming to mute entire instruments at times). Whats weird is that it doesn't happen with everything I sample only particular files and songs.

I use an RCA to Aux to connect the SP to my sample it looks like this except with a yellow on both sides of the cord

Is this a common problem? do I just need to get a preamp or a new cable? Any and all feedback is appreciated

Have you tried to adjust the input gain? I think it's either -6 dB or 10 dB. Pad 11. I don't remember what ctrl knob you use to turn it up but take it up to the max.

Yellow on both sides of the cord? This could be a problem. I'm wondering if they are sending the same channel through twice?

I just got an mpc 1000 of Craigslist and went to sample something of my phone. Nothing. Could not get any sound. I had the red and black RCA w/ 1/4 adapters reversed. I reversed them and it worked fine. I bet that cable is your problem.

I'm pretty sure it's your cable. You should only have 2 rca's, not 3 and on the 3.5 mm side you should only have two rings around the plug. I've honestly never seen a cable like yours used for audio. The cable you need is something like this
