What drum machines do SP masters like you guys use? I own a drum machine but it isn't standalone , it runs through DAW software , and due to that , it's prodigiously difficult to find the right drums for lo-fi type beats , everything in fl studio is towards EDM music , i've seen guys use the MPC's , but the roland tr-8 looks nice. What Drum Machine would you suggest?

i have a boss dr-202 the sp 202´s brother and evrything about this is lo-fi. it has some drums some bass sounds. not every sound is to my taste but some i do use again and again. it has a basic sequencer if you like that and even midi out, real time control knobs for fun (LPfilter, cutoff, resonance, decay), SICK DRUM ROLLS and if you want to dig into it its quite deep and capable. i can recommend that
other drum machine i have is zoom RT-123. it feels more like its made for guitarists to have a backing track for practice but its fun and i like some of the bass sounds on this much. drumsounds is ok but i usually end up doing bad things to them to get the lo fi. i got that for a little over 20 € so its worth it to me even if i only use the bass
tr-8 or MPC are really cool but seem too expensive to me if only for drums. but MPC does a whole lot of other stuff.

i would suggest either getting a cheap drum computer like the ones i have or keeping a bank of your favorite drumsounds on your SP or finding ways to mess with those EDM sounds you mentioned. a couple resamples later it might be just the thing

Wow , this helped a lot sir , Thank You! However , I'm interested in delving into the composition of some sort of Experimental Lo-Fi Groove Music which has the "boom bap" feel but not necessarily the Drums used in boom bap oriented music , For instance replacing the well renowned 808 kick with another type of drum , lets say an acoustic kick and replacing the snare with a disco tom of some sort. Would you have any advice geared toward what i should look into or may you refer me to some sort of specialist in this area? Also I am more than willing to listen to any of your music!

Yeah get a dr-202 it's cheap and sounds awesome. I use it on most of my beats.

drum machines are fun dedicated instruments but have their limits.
samplers can play anything you put into it.
so for the thing you describe i recommend to just download a lot of drumsounds and breaks, put them in your SP and experiment with them. resample with FX, lo-fi button etc will make you happy.

Sounds like you'd be happier with a Akai MPC 1000 or 2000. You can dl or sample your kicks, snares, toms, etc, and assign them to what pad you want it to go on. You can replace a 808 kick with a regular acoustic kick drum, but so much more.

I've never really owned one, so you may need to do some more research on the www.mpc-forums.com board.

I got an alesis hr-16 years ago for dirt cheap. Pretty cheesy overall but some usable sounds. Best thing about it is you can tune the samples up and down over a octave and a half; downtuning really beefs it up. I use a couple kicks and the clap a lot. Kind of generic but definitely usable. These days I mostly use it for the sequencer which is absolutely killer.

The hr-16 is mostly rock-oriented kits but it has a brother, the hr-16b, which is geared more toward dance music, has some sorta-808 knockoffs, deeper kicks, better snares, etc.
