Hello fellow sp users! I recently got into producing music and I am looking for advice on recording live music. I use ableton and I only have one dynamic mic (Audix i5). I've been playing around with all my tools and I feel like I'm missing something when I record live. And when I say "record live" I mean as in hooking up my mic to my interface and recording right off my rig (peavy vtm 60 with genbez 4x2 for you rockstars)

Any tips, guides, do's and don't, etc. are highly appreciated!

What do you feel like you're missing exactly?

Familiar with "proximity effect"?
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximity_effect_(audio)

Micing amps is really just a matter of finding the sweet spot(s) on a per-amp/mic basis. Use your ears, squat down and move an ear around the speaker cone... place mic where it sounds 'best'.

This spot will change depending on your amp settings/effects but you can typically find a nice balanced spot right up on the grill, dead on with the middle of the speaker and slightly to the left or right (but still pointed directly into the grill, flush). There are a few reasons I start here but the main one is to avoid the low end boost that directional dynamics tend to add (especially useful when the guitarist is still setting levels/what ever the fuck at the start of a show or session).

Holler back.
