so what exactly is the advantage of using the 99 bar / no quantize / 40 bpm method over just making separate 2 / 4 / 8 bar sequences with no quantize and beginning each sequence when necessary?

maybe i'm understanding all of this wrong.

The advantage is it's a nice hybrid of the two. You get the long sequence as if you resampled but you also have the ability to remove and edit from the sequencer. You CAN just sequence your stuff out into individual 2-4-8 bar sequences and get the same result, but the idea for 99 bar no quantize is to get the same live feel as resampling since you have to play the sample for as long as you want it playing in the song. Hope this helps.

the process just seems a bit annoying. you have to listen to the entire song all the way up to the moment you want to edit/add stuff, and if you miss that moment or mess up, you have to start all over?

Yes, just as you can mess up on the resample method and have to start again. Neither are 100% perfect.

From my observations

You gain in several ways.

+ You can now add samples that can link the otherwise the seperate parts together.

+ You can record with a feel without worrying about the end point because your BMP isn't right for 3/4 or you are changing tempo.

+ Its allows you to focus on the application of live effects and not the hop between patterns.

You lose because :

- The sequence may not be recorded in time (but you can grab the bit you like from a second sampler (loop capture) and make a loop)

- The point you made about the whole song playing to edit the outro. (I'd probably make the outro into a second sequence and use the long sequence to capture stuff without worrying about changes to the BPM and stuff then switch to the outro part).

i use an mpc 500 sp-303 and a sampletrak. the resample on the 303 is fire, use it all the time. 303 sequencer kinda sucks. the sampletrak doesn't have enough pads and has a decent enough sequencer so i use the sequencer. the mpc i use the sequencer as thats essentially it's biggest strength (it doesn't add any flavor to samples with those wack ass effects and garbage filters) and is dope as hell.

I still kind of build everything with resample but then live play it into a tape recorder/computer

it also depend on what you're into aswell, I'm way more into being able to do live performance afterward, so live playing these (in the sequencer sometime) allow me to practice my shit.

1 thing i like about resampling Loops is that you can reverse the loop and re-trigger it. Unlike pattern sequencer. (you can retrigger the pattern but not like you can a pad)

1 thing i dislike about resampling is that if you dont get mixdown right you cant goback and edit it.

^ya sinister you gotta make sure you got all the levels and effects on point before resample, can be annoying when i'm deep into the pattern and not paying enough attention to the mix and have to redo the whole thing

^^^

True thats why i like to use the pattern sequencer first and mix down the track elements. then i rebuild the track with the re-sample method.

Yamaha RM1x -> Midi thru box to 303 and st224.

Very flexible. Although, making a jam with only 303 resampling is really fun. Resampling of EXT. makes it hell of a lot easier.

haa I already know, this is a SERIOUS bump 8) but this was one of the first topics I went through when I first got my SP. I also think new members/users would find this thread insightful.

BUT, I finally found that the use of both methods is a good way to go

Does anybody know of any ways to restart the patterns if you mess up on something? I've tried using the sequencer but I hate to wait 99 bars until I can record a better performance.

I use a combination of both but I prefer to construct the drum pattern of a song with the pattern sequencer, followed by the chops or synths, after that if I want to do some effects n stuff I resample effects on to certain stuff then I mix the track down on the machine and the record it out live, but that's just one approach..

another is one is I slave the SP's midi clock to Logic Pro and track the drum sequences out then continue with either live instruments/synths & sample chops..

in this bill evans tribute I did the entire construction of the song on the SP-555, drum sequences, sample chops, effects/resampling & mix down.

https://soundcloud.com/philippeedison/b ... ng-foolish

in this Blu remix I did the latter I just did my drums on the SP then tracked them out and played a fender rhodes live, along with moog little phatty for bass, & lead.

it's nice to sometimes approach the machine differently because it can effect the sound in a major way, but I'm a knob twiddler so I like to experiment lol

I voted both as I have used the sequencer to do full tracks before and will surely use it again in the future but for now I am in love with the resample method. Took some time to get into it but now I am hooked. I love doing "takes" and having to redo if I fuck up.
The sequencer is great for using external controllers with flam/roll/velocity etc.
