Is it ever worth sampling to tapes for a lo fi tape hiss sound and then chopping on the sp 404? Or is it better to use the lo fi efx?

yo if i were you i would definitely use the lo-fi mfx coz' i tried to record to some of my old tapes and it sounded so bad that even for me a hardcore oldschool fan it was very lame. maybe my old tapes which i used are bad but i dont think that it will give you the right sound. even real oldschool artists as far as i know used ADATs (digital tape recording machines) more often.

tape doesn't sound bad. maby your recorder or your tapes are too old and dusty.also try adjusting your recording levels right, if it sounds too distorted turn down the volume, if it has too much white noise or sounds weak turn it up.

the lo-fi fx are ill too. usually i adjust the amount of lofi on each instument differently, cuz it seems to affect different sounds in a very different way. but i always keep it kinda low, too much lofi on this thing will have you on a techno steez

imma use tape to record pattern sequences too and record em back to the 404..it shld give me a nice lo fi effect, but also enable me to sequence & chop in a more complex manner

I was going to run my drums through a tape and sample them back to give them more of an analog full sound.

tips-

-turn up high frequency when recording into tape deck, so during playback u can take away tape hiss by turning down the high freq, but not killing the high freq. of what u recorded.

-check manual of recorder for recomended type/brand of tape to use. Every tape has different response and alignment with the tape heads. or experment with different tapes.

-BRING THE FUCKIN ANALOG SHIT. LETS GO!!!!!!

i've tried this before & from my experience the sound just got more muffled... but that's just me though...or the heads on the tape deck are dirty or needs to be ''demagnitized'' that's important, also the type of tape you are using, 60min maxell type II's is what i use, that's what i use on my tracks... but it does work well when sampling of those cd drum libraries, eq'em a bit then record them breaks to tape, then sample... cuts them high frequencies out & warms up the sound...
