@22tape... yeah, the sp is kinda restricted in that sense, but honestly I kinda find the workaround more fun than a regular sampler. I think that's part of what makes the SPs addicting. lol. :)

update... I got a lot of the basics figured out for patterns code wise... and managed to write a test program that *successfully* exported from the SP! Muahaha! yyyEESsS!

(btw, that a factory pattern #1 from the sx)

good work!! :D I expect the app to be ready by the time my 404sx arrives this week :P

Someone should try and see if the pattern files of the older SP still match the new SP. I would assume it perhaps doesn't, but we could try. After all, the quantize is still (destructible) input quantize only on the new model.

Excellent work so far though! Mad props.

It's probably the same - the only problem with the 404 I can think of is.. does it store all of the patterns on internal memory? if so, will it back up all patterns or just A/B? Is the backup format different to the normal file format? etc..

I would be surprised if the back up format changed, but yeah, there's a difference, as one SP can only save and restore from internal banks to card banks or viceversa, while the other doesn't care.

Perhaps this has more to do with folder structures on the SP-404sx though than file format? You're right though, this might differ.

Happen to have the factory backup files for the original 404 on my computer. They can be downloaded from Roland support.

Here's one taken at random (My 404 is on loan at the mo', so I can't make experimental patterns).

Original SP-404 factory backup
File: DCOPTN002.BIN

30 33 00 00 7f 56 33 00
30 3a 00 00 4a 5c 32 00
30 38 00 00 7f 45 4e 00

30 33 00 00 7f 49 37 00
30 38 00 00 7f 54 49 00
30 3a 00 00 55 60 30 00
30 33 00 00 7f 49 37 00
30 3a 00 00 55 6f 2d 00
30 38 00 00 7f 5c 3c 00
18 3a 00 00 4a 5c 2b 00
04 36 00 00 4a 5c 2b 00
44 33 00 00 7f 5a 41 00
30 3a 00 00 4e 6a 30 00
30 38 00 00 7f 73 30 00

00 8c 00 00 00 00 00 00
02 00 c0 00 00 00 00 00

Is that last line different?

BTW - HUGE progress there ModulR !!!

Yeah that last line looks diff... 02 is prob the # of bars in the pattern, and c0 is something else, dunno what (yet)... the note off column looks like it might be switched too cos something like 33 00 would be a real long note.

Thanks for this info tho, cos it might only need some minor tweaks to make a regular 404 export utility. How are the patterns stored on the 404? I've never owned one... so is there a folder with all the patterns like the SX? or does it only work based on backups?

btw, thanks for the encouragement peoples!

All patterns are stored in the Roland folder.
That's the way I copy pattern... so maybe your program can read the old
.bin files too? Exporting patterns into a midi file is really useful!!!

here is a random pattern from the old 404:
http://www.box.net/shared/qsgtf1tpgg

Would be cool if you could give it a try.

Cool, d/l'ed that one... could you or someone with a 404 do me a favor and make a pattern that's like 1 bar, no quantize, where you gate the pad and hold the pad for almost the entire bar. Then upload the bin somewhere with a link... need to see what it does with it. Then maybe I can do the 404 and SX in one shot.

don't get confused, it's called DCOPTN024.BIN too... (Pattern C1)

one bar / sample A1 is on gate and played non quantized/hold nearly the whole pattern... might not start at 1.1 exactly...

on the old 404 you just have access to the patterns that are stored on the cf-card... hope it's not an issue that the sample is from bank A?
If you need a new file lemme know...

*hey man i just updated the link...
