there's a few ways of doing this

you can turn down the volume on the samples you don't want recorded so that only the desired samples play
there's also a way to use the DJ Looper effect on unwanted pads to switch them off

nice. you'll save money once you have the 404 'cos you'll just want to stay in and make beats :)

here's more detail on using the DJFX Looper to mute, courtesy of J.Daniels:

You probably don't need a special tutorial just to get the patterns running off midi sync. I'm pretty sure it comes ready setup to automatically run off midi clock whenever it's coming in. If midi clock isn't there, the 404 runs off it's own tempo.

The 404 manual covers it pretty well and you can always download the owners manual .pdf from Roland ( ww.rolandus.com ) to get an early idea of things.

You don't have to trigger samples from the 404 pattern sequencer - every sample pad has it's own midi note, so you can use it as a soundmodule with a sequencer if you want. The 404 can only play at most 12 samples at a time though, and any stereo samples count as 2 of the sounds (voices). If most of the sounds are short percussion and stabs, the voice limit's not really a problem - tho some apparently use 2 404's.

I normally just 2 track my 404 and then do some slight mastering. The 404 has enough stuff in there to get your beat mixed nicely all in the box :)
