Hi all.

Recently bought a 404 - almost the first thing I did was update it with the latest software version 1.04 from the Roland US site (UK site doesn't have it).

Something I've noticed is that the midi notes that trigger the samples are one higher on mine than it says in the manual. Can't remember the note numbers now, but the manual said the first pad (Bank A pad1) plays from an A# - but on my machine it's actually next note up - a B natural. the A# in fact, turns the Ext Source on or off - nothing said in the manual about that.

Was the 1.02 version the same with this, or is it an undocumented change in 1.04 or, was the manual wrong in the first place?

Cheers
Jim

ooops

Sorry all, my bad. Did not read my manual properly!

Must... get... eyes... tested...

Once again sorry if I got anyone totally perplexed with this stupid question.

Know what you mean. It made me go crosseyed.

Bank A pad 1 is note 47 which Roland also call note B2, some makes number the octaves different, but it's still note number 47. Then as you count up from 47 it goes thru all the pads and banks up to pad 12 in card bank F, and that's number 118, an A#.

If you hook up a midi keyboard you'll see all the pad 1's in all the banks play off a B key, they just get an octave higher for each bank.

The last 4 card banks are on the next midi channel up from whatever your 404 is set on - mine is on channel 1, so the last banks from G are on channel 2.

So Bank C pad 1 is note 71 on the 404's midi channel and Bank G pad 1 is still note 71, but on the next midi channel up.

That's probably why you can't set the 404 for higher than channel 15 - it needs the channel up for the last 4 card banks.

The lowest note number, 46, is the one that turns the Ext Source On or Off.

I tried it out with my old Alesis SR16 drum box, that lets you change the midi note for each drum pad by note number or name. The numbers were the same as the 404 manual, but the name was B1, not B2 (I think, or it was B3 - it was different anyway!).

Does all that help make sense of the list in the manual?

Jim
