No worries, dude. I am happy to say my SP 404sx LIVES AGAIN! I was successful in replacing my volume pot.

It was pretty basic stuff although it did take quite a while for Roland's flux to melt off and the mother board was heating up a little bit, so at times I stopped just to be careful. PATIENCE IS A MUST

I wish I had taken photos of my steps... sorry ya'll

It was my first time using a soldering gun. I purchased the cheapest one at a Radioshack for $12.99 and the tool to suck out the melted flux which is very similar looking to a turkey baster for $7.99. My friend provided the flux.

So if I can do it y'all can do it!

Cheers

Here's how to test the volume potentiometer:

Image

  1. Set your multimeter to resistance-testing mode and choose the correct range.
  2. Probe pins #2 and #4 to find the potentiometer's maximum resistance. Your multimeter should display "50KΩ" (mine displayed "46.5KΩ" - close enough).
  3. Probe pins #3 and #4 while slowly turning the knob clockwise through its entire range of motion. Your multimeter should display values decreasing logarithmically (this isn't a linear pot) 50KΩ to 0Ω (mine displayed 90KΩ at all times - it's broken).

More info at http://www.ladyada.net/library/metertut/resistance.html

I ordered my replacement for $11 shipped this morning.

Im about to attempt this on a 303 that i just got off ebay... i sampled a record and bass guitar into it and it seems to be ultra quiet.. as i turn the volume up it maxes out at about 3/4 turn of the knob (still not even close to full volume) and then the volume actually starts going down as you continue clockwise... i took it apart and all the solders are good.. i figure it has to be the pot.. the graphic about testing the pot is very helpful. I love testing pot
