Ive been experimenting lately on using my 404 as a synth. Basically, with the subsonic you can add a low frequency sine wave.. but you can also completely replace the sample with it. So, I just hum a nice long sustained note into the mic and replace it with the sine wave. Then I add the needed effects to create the sound im going for. I usually use pitch, filter, compressor, Isolator, EQ, and then maybe some flanger, delay, reverb etc. I made a pretty cool electronic drum kit using it. I'll post it on friday when I go record my latest stuff. Has anyone else messed with this ?

Good Tip!

Try it with another synth as the source sound - especially if you want to use the synth in a melodic sense.

I'm gonna try this humming thing though...

well... the subsonic lets you change the pitch of the sine wave so I resample a bunch of tiems at different pitches... then u can play your melodys :)

It works a treat! Tried it last night and I'm lovin it! I made all of the notes part of a mute-group too, so it really sounds like a monosynth!! :):):)

Yeah, I've been doing that for a few months nows :

- Importing Sine, saw, square and triangle sounds at different pitches (C, G, high C)
- mixing them the way I want
- Filtering them and adding effects.
- Then you just have to make different pitches (using the chromatic PS) to get melodies.

Basically, with wave forms, the SP404 IS a synth...especially if you remember that you can control it via a keyboard and make the sound evolve in real time.

I've been also importing TB303 loops with no filter and filtering them live... this kills !

the SP 404 is sooooo powerful !
