Have just got hold of a SP-404SX which I'm going to use for sample playback on stage.

Triggering doesn't seem to work like the manual describes. On p. 5 of the manual -- I'm talking about the latest manual on the Roland site -- it says:

"[Gate] button: Switches between Gate playback (the sample will play only while you hold down the pad) and Trigger playback (the sample will alternate between play and stop each time you press the pad)."

The Gate button works like the manual says when it's switched on. But when it's switched off (unlit) it doesn't 'alternate between start and stop' at all. It just retriggers the sample every time you hit it. Or am I doing something wrong?

(It's not a big deal for me if the sample retriggers every time. It's more a worry about accidentally hitting a wrong pad while another sample is playing and consequently triggering a long, loud and inappropriate sample which I can't quickly stop. I know that I can press cancel quickly 4 times to stop all playback, but that stops the other, correct, sample as well. I can also see a workaround -- turn Gate on, press the pad that I want to stop again, then turn Gate back off, but that's a bit slow and fiddly when you're panicking on a live stage.)

Looks like the manual forgot to mention that the loop button needs to be on in order for that to work..

Also, in an emergency you can hit [delete] and then [cancel] to kill all sounds immediately if you hit something by accident.

the loop button has to be on like the poster above said.

Also if you press hold on a gated sample, it will play fully.

Okay, thanks. It's annoying that the manual is wrong about such a basic function. It's not like the manual is incredibly detailed (like a synth manual) and this is some minor error about some obscure function. Starting and stopping sample playing is one the most important things this unit does. (It's not really a problem for me, so it's not like I'm that worried about it. But it'd be good if you could change how pressing a sample button works in this regard).
