Post subject:  MS-1: fair price?

hey y'all,
first post.

i've been lurking here for a minute since i bought my 303, and
i've come across an MS-1 on CL that i'm kinda interested in picking up.
the guy is asking 100, no PCMCIA card or CF card adapter included, and i feel like i should talk him down, but i'm not sure what's fair.

any ideas?
the ad has been up for 7 days, so i feel like he could be at the
end of his rope if he's desperate for cash or really wants to get rid of
it.

also, maybe there is some convincing knowledge i could drop on him
to be more persuasive?

in any case, thanks for the awesome resource that is the SP forums!

peace.

If its fully upgraded with 1.13 OS and included the PCMIA card, then yeah, a 100 bucks would be worth it. But you have to remember that the technology is 1995. I would haggle the guy to bring it down to at least $75 dollars, let him know how scarce the memory cards are and how expensive they've become (well not that expensive, since they use to be $200 then, but still $40 dollars extra today is a lot for those things). Even have the guy upgrade it for you, if you can, just so that both can be happy. If its upgraded then you can use the adaptors for compact flash.

To be honest, $65 dollars is a fair price for an MS-1 without anything.

thanks for the rapid response!
i formulated a respectful yet knowledgeable response
to the ad hitting on the points you provided, leaving a little room
for haggling, and i'll just have to wait and see how this guy
responds.

I don't think he's totally clueless as he states the possible need for PCMCIA cards to expand sampling memory. hopefully that wont rob me of a deal.

thanks again! i'll post the results of this wheeling and dealing e-commerce session.

Its a great little machine especially with the 303. I learned how to chop with that thing.

Hope the guy gives in, the MS-1 has a very distinct dirty sound, you would find it a dope mate for your 303.

Peace

i'm really interested in it as a portable device, and it seems
like it has a pretty simplistic and easy work flow. plus i want
to get my friends into what i'm getting into, and it seems like
the MS-1 would be a good segue for some of them.

too bad the guy is rolling his ego around. he acted offended at my lowball offer. i don't know if he understands how CL or haggling work.

regardless, i appreciate your input. thanks for your help!

peace, forril.

Offended? What did you say? "Bitch, I got $60 for your sampler with shipping included!" Nah, but you can't blame the guy. I'm very attached to mine, had it since 1996 and I'm practically a ninja master with it. I have alot of sentimental value for it, maybe that dude too. There's no other sampler like it. Its fast and easy and can hang with the best of them.

I was looking around the net for one and damn, they're really hard to find. A year or two they were scattered around like tree leaves, but now not even ebay. Strange.

yeah i was pretty much like "FUCK YOU GIVE ME YOUR SHIT!"

i think the lame part is i was pretty respectful and almost apologetic in asking for a reduced price, but he still had to act like a jerk. given that i can't find one anywhere else, i probably would have bent over and taken it for $100, but he refused to even respond to me after that. oh well.

for now i'll just have to concentrate on my 303, my ST-224 which should be arriving any day now and DS-10 for the nintendo DS that i'm picking up later today. i'll get my portable music making in however i can!

Maybe the secret has been revealed? Maybe a bunch of people saw that Elliot Lipp studio video? I hear electro-hip hop is all the rage with the kids these days.

If you happen to hear of a cheap MS-1 somewhere down the line, don't forget me!

one day i'll chop like a ninja on old-tech.

peace

Well the SP-202 is almost like the MS-1 minus the sequencer, but I'll take the 303's sequencer any day. At least that loops but the MS is a what you bang out is what you get kind of deal. But the chops are so crystal clear on the MS-1.

Believe me, I'll let you know if one is available. I'm currently working on my EP using the MS and 303. Peep Spit Shine and Dead Ficus Tree on myspace, those were done with that combo. But since I got the MV, I just might sell mine...we'll see.

Got one with a 10mb memory card for $90, I think? Found another one without the memory card at a pawn shop for $40. I've yet to get into the MS-1 as far as producing beats is concerned. I have just been using it as a tool for vocal samples. Where would I be able to find the 1.13 OS upgrade?

Actually working on a SP-202 beat tape and would like to include 2 or MS-1 tracks.

Damn, I've always been tempted by an Ms-1 but I'm too cheap to buy one..seems like a dirty little machine. If anyone wants to ship theirs to me, I can almost gurantee you'll get it back... anyone?

Getting mine for $80+tax, but have no idea when I will get it home. It’s coupled together with a PO33 (the guy behind the counter wrote it as one ticket instead of 2, which didn’t seem unreasonable). But cheap samplers are getting rare it would seem, so supply & demand might be why some gear will go up in price, even though it’s considered less powerful than most DAWs. It comes down to the sound that these can do that your DAW can’t.
