Whats up guys, I should be getting an MV 8800 in a week or two. I know that the MV will take a 512MB PC133 CL memory chip, but I'm having trouble figuring out which brand would work the best. I had my fair share of Roland products and I know not every brand can be compatible. I've seen RAM for low as $11 and as high as $120 at various sites and it seems Roland doesn't make the chip anymore.

Please help, and thanks.

I would go with a well established brand, like Kingston.

My MV8800 has Kingston Value Ram 512MB. I haven't paid more than 50 bucks or so for it, but you've got to carefully check the specs.

They are becoming more difficult to find though, even online.

Thanx PHeMoX, you're right about its rarity. I went through about 40 sellers on Amazon and none of them ships outside of the US. Which sucked because they had Kingston and PNY for low as $25. Anyway, I finally found a seller that will ship it out to me in PR. Its a Centon 512mb pc133 sdram cl 3.3v with 168 pins for $47.

Can't wait for the MV to arrive, I've been spending my free time indulging the virtual MV at Roland's site for a couple of months and printed the manuals. I feel its a machine built for me. Almost like an advanced SP606 but with more. Thanks again.

You're welcome. Oh, and coming from the SP-606 myself I am confident you're going to love it. 8)

Its a supreme make by Roland indeed. What really caught me is the ability to dirty up the sound like an SP. No MPC can do that.

I'm still gonna keep the 606, but I have to part with ESX and the MPC500.

Peace

Oh yeah you can dirty up your beats with the ESX

Ill Green Has Risen was made strictly on the ESX. The way I filtered out the voice chants and brought out the guitar and laced that with the D.Axelrod sample on top just blew me away when it was first made.

It was strange to me at first, but after 4yrs with it, its a real simple sampler with supernatural capabilities. Its like a cross between an SP 505 and an MPC. I think thats what people expected from it, to be this complicated sampler when in reality its the most simplest.

With most of my SP 606 beats, I sampled and tweaked everything within the ESX first, then passed the samples to the 606 to be raped and pillaged even further. And the vacuum tubes really do give your beats a distinct sound.

I do miss it  But I got too many samplers in my arsenal. The MV will be the last sampler though.

 The Monster finally arrived!!!

Freakin' thing is big as a tank. First thing I noticed when I turned it on was that it was quiet. No fan hum, no harddrive motor noises or cd drive buzzes. Right now I'm just messing with the presets trying to get to know the operations and stuff.

I'll have to hook up the RAM when I get off work. I didn't know I had to unscrew the bottom.

Yeah, there's quite some screws, but it's worth it! The 512mb will be very useful. I think most cats will make projects of around 230mb size, so 512mb will be necessary for the bigger projects anyway.

It's big, but I like the feel of some good real estate. :)

(off topic:)
I'm sure you're still in the process of getting to know the machine, but just a small heads-up anyway, mpc-stuff.com has different color pads now for it. Including 'glow in the dark' ones. Pretty cool. :D

Perhaps the SP-404 crowd should ask if they are will to make some different color pads for the 404 too? The fanbase of the 404 is huge.

Yeah, I saw that at the Nation. I wish they made a light green, but dude wants to see how well they sell then he might make green pads. I'll most definitely get the black ones to go with this design I'm working on for a styleflip.

I think I lost my welcome card at mpc-forums, all I said was the MV is better than the 5000 :P

LOL!!! Whats strange is that most of them diss the MPC500 and the 5000 alot but if you mention a machine better than those, they get defensive. There were short fuses last week when I said I prefer the SP606 over the 500.

Anyway, back on topic. I did the transplant and the RAM works lovely. System shows 96% free space and the 512 shows. I was kinda nervous because I tend to break things just by tapping sh!t, but its done.
