LoopMantra: I really like the first riddim and what you made with bongas. The "sonic" FX is well placed too.
asha c: Feel the massive attack / morcheeba vibe. Delay is mastered.
Green Dutch: This could be a good intro of a tape/ live set but I don't hear it as a "veritable beat" (hope you got what I mean).
Cgko: I put this one in the same vibe with asha c (I prefere his version tbh), variation on the drums are interesting but the mix is inequal.
Sleeps Numb: I dig the drums (how did you make ?), good ambiant vibe.
nouk: The kind of minimalistic beat I wanna do sometimes but never able to make...
Ellaguru: I'm not the only one with high tempo. Interesting scissors beat.
bleggedi: Crazy how fast you adapt fast to spbb style, I'm not enjoying that much but I like the fact you tried to do something original (same for the rest !) .
kel: The one that keeps the more the original album vibe (sorry for the bad english?) but too messy to me.

It was between asha c & S.numb
I voted asha c

Wow, eleven entries.
Wish I'd see more battles like this tbh :D
Love all the beats, kinda hard to decide...
Two that were a bit more appealing to me than the others - Asha C's and HELLOPILLOW's

Asha C - love that Bristol vibe man, I'm always striving towards that atmosphere, well, most of the time at least, and funny thing is that I considered using that violin sample myself, but thought it would drive me towards dark sounding beat (it does sound like it's from a horror movie tbh) - irony being that my beat turned out to be dark sounding nevertheless :D I mean, more than I was aiming for.

HELLOPILLOW - man, that beat of yours brought instant memories of that cheesy commercial crap by Icona Pop ("I love it ") - in a good way, don't get me wrong. I mean their song itself is meh, but I loved the beat the moment I heard it.
I also have huge respect for people who are not thinking in terms of genres.. I understand that this forum is mostly hip hop oriented (which is absolutely logical, SP's are rarely used for other types of music, at least not as much as lofi /hip hop /trip hop community uses it), but I personally feel that there should be no boundaries in music, and I wish more musicians / producers would just let go, and experiment more

That's why my vote goes to HELLOPILLOW, though I gotta say, Asha C's beat is a split hair away.

Think I mentioned in one of the previous battles - wish we could have a 'two points system' - as in, you give two votes to your favourite beat, and one vote to the runner up. I think it would add to the thrill a bit, plus it seems more fair imho. Most of the time I really can't decide, and sometimes I even feel bad for not being able to give vote to someone.

Great battle fam, looking forward to the next one!

 meh is nice for this song  but thanks. When I'm doing beat I'm not really thinking "I'm making hip hop beat" (but I'm not the only one here). For me, the concept of "sp beat" is unlimited, it could be world music to reggae to noise experimentation. You can do everything with this box (404), it'll stay my fav sampler for ever <3.
c'mon, we are far from "lo-fi hip-hop" genre... (my last beat is really "classic hip hop beat tho  )

Oh, but I really like Lo Fi :D
I think it's a bit underrated and underestimated tbh

True that, I always do the same thing - go where the sounds take me, I don't really care as long as it doesn't sound like folk music from my country :D but I'd say I'm more of a Nu-jazz aficionado than anything else, too bad I don't have that much time to really dig in and create, my job's killing me man (I own a Caffe Gallery downtown), and my bands are not cutting me slack either....but, I guess it'll pass in time.

I love the SP, but I also hate it a bit.
It's not really user friendly for live acts, improvisation that is, too much workaround and a bit frustrating work flow - for me at least, I like to move fast.
I was even thinking of switching to MPC live, but - thank God - I decided not to, and bought Arturia drumbrute impact instead, bunch of vinyls and tons of weed :D
Best decision I ever made, I swear. For 300$ that thing is a killer machine for live looping and improvisation.

Voted for Asha C for the overall vibe/aesthetic.

Interesting source material. I listened to this at work and weirded out my coworkers. Wanted to get in on this but stumbled back into the arena too late to catch this round. Nice work to all who participated. I love the OG format of this round!

yo,
these are my favorites.
1 hellopillow
2 sleeps numb
2.5 loopmantra
3 cgko
kel you need to see a doctor!

i wish i could have taken more time for my beat, but my job was consuming. the source was fire, definitly will flip around the samples on my sp404. thanks a lot for the vote!

to explain my vote, making a bumping housetrack out of that material: great. sleeps numb, loopmantra and cgko made the music i can relate to the most in this round: you all have a thick drumbeat and some structure. although i really like the noise-approach of some of you guys (and would love to hear some sp-reggae!) but the record was already super-noisy so the hardest ist to make something totally different.

looking out for the next round. if the sample is up on friday, i can take nearly the whole weekend to sp around.

hope you guys are doing well in the real world.
and if you're located in europe please go vote on sunday!

I would definitely vote, but effing Swedish bureaucracy I've been waiting two years for my citizenship application to be processed! Would love to take my part in voting down the fascists and the populists.

I'll vote for hellopillow too... This week really was like a resample challenge and way more time-consuming than the typical battle, but that's cool. Nurse with wound styles was kinda my jam when I was in my late teens; not feeling it any more but there were plenty of sounds to sample and process so a good rule-set combo and everyone brought something to the table. Until next time!

thank you, I'm a "populist" btw...

I don't want the United States of Europe. but this is off topic I know

Hey guys! That was a nice and kinda weird.
One more vote for HELLOPILLOW. I also like the sinister vibe in kel's track.

Ps: The weird pullout thing with nouk was cringy

Yeah, don't know wtf happened. I saw that angry post he wrote, but then it was deleted, so I thought maybe the guy had a rough day. It was only yesterday I realised he pulled the track off the soundcloud
Funny thing is, not a bad track.
Think he's pissed for not getting any votes, don't know what else could've been.
Some people take music making way too competitive without no proper reason...

Thanks Kel for hosting. Really enjoyed this battle and listening to all your beats. Was super tough, but forced me to work hard and push my creativity using synthesis style techniques and layering more than I ever have before.

I voted for pillow.

I at work, but will leave a detailed breakdown a little later
:o

Also will explain how i made the drums for pillow.

Ok guys thanks for the votes, it's been longtime I won a battle.
@nouk: don't be sad, like I said before, I really respect this "minimal type beat" since it's kind of hard to me to make (I tend to add and add stuffs).
@sleepnumb: I'm waiting for your tip ;)

Let's do the next battle.
