but its interesting to hear that some are using different drum samples... I feel like that is pretty egregious.

No one used outside drums, at least as far as I know. I was talking specifically about battles where the rules say use your own drums.

I haven't been sleeping well for extended periods of time so I was particularly more disoriented than usual last night, and some super grim shit was goin on yesterday on top of everything else so my brain was all over the place. Once I started talking about something I just kept going off the top to keep my brain occupied but I wound up makin everything worse by bein super confusing and making no sense.

sry peeps

I voted for nubes, I really liked the feel of that one and the trippy vocal part goin on in the background.

Sp battles are about pushing yourself to use the provided samples based on the rules. Winner picks the rules and you respect them to get yourself out of the comfort zone. Winning isn't the point, having fun and learning new ways to use the equipment is, or was. I sometimes go out the lane but am 100% cool with a disqualification. sp's can make kicks and snares w/o any samples, we used to do this with one song, no drums

It seemed like that's what the resample challenges were all about, a total junk sample that you really had to force your sp and your creativity to do anything cool with. Those were my favorite but they seem to have fallen by the wayside... The last one had 3 entries and is from like the middle of the summer lol

I hope everything works out for you... I think its great were having this convo cuz Ive def been confused by some clear outside sample usage... I don't know enough to be able to tell with certainty if people are cheating and using daws or other machines like that (besides the mixing and mastering) , but Ive even got to the point where I pull it straight off the sd card and upload it to soundcloud just to try to do all the compression and knob twisting on the actual box...

Yo I'll take the Disq. I could have sworn outside use of vocals/acapellas were ok. I did use only elements of the samples for the beat. I see Brutus is on my tail. So if someone else doesn't become a clear winner Brutus should start the next round. Thanks for the votes everyone!

At least since ive been in the battles they have been allowed... or at least tolerated.. now that i think about it ive recorded some of my own vocals.. it might be time to make some set rules that are like “unless otherwise noted by the previous winner” for example allowing outside vocals/acapellas unless the rules say otherwise or allowing daw mastering unless the rules say otherwise

personally I'm still in favor of rules being up to complete discretion of the host, and contestants should be more introspective and just ask in the thread if it's ok if they wanna do some weird shit

thx bro, and I agree definitely. the battles were way more fun back when the rules were real strict and people abided by them or got dumped on. I think it would be a big step if everyone mutually agreed to take battle rules as sworn oath if they enter the competition again

I didn't participate in this battle and haven't listened to any tracks, but this is a good discussion to be having imo. (I might do that later as long as I'm here).

The stock-ruleset is stickied in the arena forum so that should be read by everyone... It might be an idea to paste the ground rules in every new battle thread and then the winner can bend the rules to their will or not.

The rule that is consistently ignored that bugs me isn't the submissions, it's the voting. Last battle there were twelve entries and only nine votes, one of which was Marco who didn't have an entry but took the time to post in the thread who he voted for and why.

Ghost votes (ppl who click the poll and don't post in the thread) make me skeptikall... do we know that the winner voted?

No vote no win as far as I'm concerned. Follow SPBB rule number 4 and there ain't no issues.

+1 to lif also
damn I forgot about those rules, I read em so long ago
I don't think it's really my place to disagree w/ them as they predate me by so long but is putting download enabled on all entries still considered good etiquette? I was totally unaware as I had only seen that utilized by hosts who were compiling submissions into a tape.

IDK why people seem to be so reserved about participating in the voting discussion, like if they're worried about hurting feelings, or they just don't like any entries, or if they just don't care.

I think a simple "this one just sounded best to me idk why", or even "sorry I didn't like any of the entries, no offense I just wasn't feeling it", or anything really would be more helpful than just ghosting the latter half of the event. you don't have to do the track-by-track breakdown to chip in, some people just want to do that for the community when they've got the time

+ obviously life taking a shit on you out of nowhere is a pretty widely acknowledged occurrence so ghosting against your will here or there isn't end of days, but doing it every battle is just suspect IMHO

Hey all,

I was a bit concerned about my post when I made it. I didn't want to come off as a buzzkill or anything like that. I simply wanted to stress emphasis on the rules and make it fair for everyone that actually abided to them.

for "the rules question":
1)i didn't followed the 2mins limit...that's true...
2)i added some vocals samples: that was wrong or...?

after the voice snippet debacle I changed the url to withdraw from the event
if you still wanna listen it's here
after I did I realized the host also used speech so I don't even know if I actually broke the rules now or not, but I figured there was no point to try to awkwardly slide back into the event
