Have to agree with Ella - have a feeling there would be more engagement if we ran a tighter schedule...

Couple things have been eating at me the last couple battles is that the number of votes cast have been fewer than the number of participants, which seems odd to me at the least. plus I see someone has already voted this week without an accompanying post, which should, even if not explaining why, would at least let's us know who cast the vote. Like anything in life, you know - you get out what you put in... personally, I'd like to see the SP boards thrive...

With the polite rant out of the way I offer my most humble and easily-discardable feedback on #168:

gis: liked the atmospherics a lot, nice NOT to hear a beat actually - generated a stasis-field, a bit like the waiting room (purgatory it's called, yes?)

Jangle: Excellent use of the drum samples, esp. that open hat was just perfect. Totally dug the whistling and bassline (i'm a sucker for the human-element, exposing yrslf, raw like that) - some chilled out downtempo right there.

Alnitak: The bridge at 1:30, so sweet, uplifting. You managed to get a lot of the provided samples in there, great layering, blending, composition ->> track-minded. Again, real chilled.

Yon: Man, totally dug the filtering (i mean, really, really) and the concept, but in this case couldn't get over the feeling that the lofi just strangled the life out of your track this week.

Asha: Drums were killer - and I think I get the idea of what you were trying to do, almost an epic feel with the guitars etc but somehow it felt a little 'safe'... for me needed to just push harder, somehow.

Fresh: Masterful, to pull off the head from this tune - SHIT! well-done! But hey, why not some improvisation or breakdown after stating the tune? You could've taken it absolutely anywhere for say, 20-30 seconds before restating the theme at the end... for me, hearing the theme stated a third time and faded out left me feeling a little short-changed.

Rak: Welcome!! Embryum is def. def. the start of something... good solid base to build off/on - look forward to hearing more.

Unfolding: Truly Three Dimensional in the prod! That rolling/scraping verbed out and extreme panned perc. was really effing nice. Layers of information without being cluttered.

l i f: idk... chaos, wtf? back to the drawing board, dude - or find a more constructive use for your time..!

I'm gonna say Jangle and Alnitak a tie for 2nd place, with a vote for Unfolding for flip-form and prod skillz.

EDIT: forgot, I wanted to give a shoutout to mr. oxheadalexis for a nice batch of samples to work with - no track from you this week and you've lost your digs... I hope you're looking after yourself man...!?

Hey all, super cool tracks! All so awesome!

I haven't been on these battles for a few months but I also agree with ella and lif in terms of tighter time limits... Why not implement a rule where the battle automatically goes to poll after 7 days or something?

Anyhoo, here's my thoughts on each track:

Alnitak Kid: Super groovy drums, love the chill vibes with the filters, the different sort of breakdowns and st uff. Nice vocal cut... This was a very pro-sounding track...

Yon: So grimy with that 16bit sub-bass, that static sound with the percussion sounds so awesome! So many subtle effects goin' on here, the paced stutters and wahs, very ill skills.

Asha C: Heavy, the crunched guitar is awesome. This beat feels really cinematic I picture helicopters and thunderstorms. Nice wind-down at the end.

Gis Sweden: This track is creepy with the backwards voices and crickity creeks. As always so atmospheric, great blends with the reverbs...

Janglesoul: Very relaxed and melancholic... Nice bass riff and whistle melody, I like the paced drums too.

Rak: Grimy and to the point, good dark tune, nice use of the synthy blips.

Unfolding: Nice use of the vocal samps in the background, cool beat with the fast hats over top and that little breakdown bit.

Lif: Wild track! Crazy sampling with the breakdowns and change-ups. Great bass underneath, well put-together.

I voted for Alnitak Kid, great beat start to finish, very classy, nice work!

Lif thanks for the input - it was good to hear as I lamented not doing more with my track after posting and hearing all the crazy stuff done here - gotta get my lazy butt back in the creative process!

Yes, a week long battle should be alright. The Stones Throw-battles are a few days too short for me, I rarely find the time. But a week should be doable.

Thanks for a nice round, and &Ada/Carlos for a challenging idea. I had a hard time with the samples until I decided to make my own melodies. Thankfully, it was allowed.

Yon:
Cool soundscape, soundtrack-feel. LIke the crunchy-lofi textures, but I feel it lacks some kind of melodic part/hook.

Asha C:
Nice beat, I enjoy the contrast between piano and the waves of white noise graininess.

GIS Sweden:
There's a soundtrack feel to this that I quite like, but the melody of those bells/rhodes-notes get a bit boring after a while. Cool use of that percussive "knocking sound", castanets? - almost a bit Morricone.

Fresh:
Sweet and soothing to the ears. Really nice to hear a song, and cool with the human speeding up thing.

Rak:
I enjoy the drumbeat and the dark chords, but to me those panned synth drills don't really mix very well.

Unfolding:
Dense, complex textures and a good groove. Cool intro and ending as well.

LIF:
Really interesting beat. Very dense and complex, and still something almost latin and dancy. Sweet ending.

Alnitak Kid:
A requiem that manages to be both touching and really groovy. Really nice sounds and samples all blend so harmonically. Sweet!

I vote Alnitak!

No man, I'm sorry - i think I'm just buzzing too high cause I was s'posed to be prepping some lessons this weekend and i was fooling with beats instead, just a little on edge as a result of procrastination.. but yeh, i reckon the rule of giving a reason for your vote is a good one, and feedback, if you have way too much time on your hands ;)

Man, i look forward to your next battle! But i personally would hope that the battleground could be a place for really pushing what the sp's can do, rather than being a week-after-week who can make the most sp-characteristic beat (hopefullly I'm not reading too much into your comment..??)

This week was a little different maybe, 'cause carlos set some differnt rules, but usually i think this is an sp-only comp... but anyways my point of reference would be trying to make a cool track with an SP and if it gets a certain sound because it's produced on an sp then that's a byproduct of the tools used, not the main goal.

Or it could be the main, çause sp's just sound cool.. (I mean, I find my stuff being influenced by the 404-sound, which i interpret as way more characteristic than my 808, for example) Another example was I just read an article written by Alexkid who said he and others use time-displacement params on DAW's to emulate the out-of-sync-ness of sp's and mpc's, so whaddayaknow.

@Fresh: yo man - what up wit da lazy bro?! Mingus would slap yo' ass! (You shoulda slipped a Dolphy-solo in there---I'll guarantee Eric'll be blowing at my funeral 8) )

YON: dope melancholic vibe. like watching the credits roll on your life. i like the tempo and deep bass.

ASHA C: really like the whisky reverse sounds swirling round in the background. crisp drums. hefty emotional track.

GIS: glad to see you're back man. nice abstract, dissonant track. felt like a 'life flash before your eyes' collage. get the same spiritual 'waiting room' lif described.

JANGLESOUL: really nice bassline! i always struggle with basslines.. interesting drums throughout. i dig the whistling and the arrangement. sad.

FRESHSERF: wasn't familiar with the original but very impressed with the chromatic pitching skills and the tempo shift is dope.

RAK: like how you extended those weird bell sounds. strong drums. live performance is the way and i don't think the volume was too low either haha.

UNFOLDING: dope mix, nice and wide. voice manipulation is on point. rad textures. solid eerie track.

LIF: spun out. in a good way ha. like how you managed to use those quirky 50's samples, nice job. i get that raw madlib kinda vibe from it.

not one beat i wouldn't want to listen to.
i would go with LIF cos it came purely from left field but for 'funeral vibes' i'm gonna go with JANGLESOUL cos it's sad and has a part of himself in it.

thanks all for the votes, appreciate the love. carlos made it easy, they were all in the same key basically!

Alnitak kid - man that intro is sweet and when the beat kicks, man o man, involuntary head nodding! really well structured, loads of light and shade in the track. Fantastic work!

Yon - nice lofi dirt here! those dirty elongated snares are wicked! Cool dirty ass beat

Asha  c - real nice man, got that concrete belly distortion drone! Got a real nice Trent reznor soundtrack vibe, pretty epic man

Gis  Sweden - loving The atmosphere oozing from this track. Really does give that netherworld feeling, like have you ever read Philip Pullmans books? Like his afterlife. Like it dude!

Janglesoul - interesting take on this one, like that bass, but maybe a bit high in the mix for me, drums could have a bit of reverb for my taste, sound a bit dry, but reverbs like salt and pepper, add it to your own taste :-)

Fresh serf pro -  oh man this is sweet, really like the vibe here, proper future jazz feel, tones feel good in my ears!

Rak - real nice drums on this, cool beat all round actually, nice!

Unfolding - those off beat keys are wicked, and then the change up to half time, yeah dude! Proper tune, got light and shade and structure, real nice work man

Lif - up beat! nice to hear the death theme on a more positive tip! This is cool man, a really fun track, got a carnival feel to it! Nice man :-)

This was a great battle! And this is fast becoming my favourite way to kill the train ride to college! Great beats all round, seems everyone got real inspired by this one! Gotta go with alnitak kid on this one, it's an album track man! So impressed with the quality! Well done to all!

Thanks for helpful feedback! Cool with suggestions on how the track could be made better. I'll think more about the mix next time.
