OK so there's been 6 votes & no comments so far. Dudes, tell us who you're voting for & why. Don't be afraid to say what you liked & didn't like about the entries you didn't vote for either.

Feedback is important, we should all be grown up enough to handle getting some honest constructive criticism. Not asking for a 5 paragraph review, just a few words along the lines of "feeling this bit, that part didn't jell". Anyway...

Teewok: Interesting approach to the rhodes, really liked the way you flipped it in such a jazzy, kinda improv way. For such a limited palette you made the full 90 seconds work. Nice.
davidarcade: Whoah, this is a killer flip. Really digging the synth-bass & melancholic vibe. The change-up at the end was subtle, only really caught how important that was the 2nd time I listened to it.
asha c: Damn that bass came through thick, your drum fills are coming along well too. Could've used a wider range of samples to change things up, but this is a well balanced microwave.
Obtainius: Gotta be honest here, I've never liked the 404's lo-fi! It sounds way too harsh on the highs, it needs some low-pass filter to sound 'right'. At least everything else fits in the right place here.
Chopperman: Dude, there's some aspects to your drums I want to hear fleshed out further. Same with the noises you chucked in. Reckon you could move into some abstract noise/IDM territory & do a good job of it (like early Autechre) but that rhodes held it back, kept it too 'human'.
*disclaimer* I'm getting a bit over that rhodes sample now... Maybe that's because I listened to it so much when making my flip, maybe because we all went straight for it...
janglesoul: No worries about being new to these! Mate, I've been entering these battles for years & I still kinda suck! As Zavium commented, keep practicing man! You're on the right track going for smaller details like the way you've used delay & the sample's surface noise was a really cool texture to bring out with compression.
MarcoGrouch: Man I actually dug your first flip! But yeah, going for a 2nd version paid off. Those alien sounds are dope! The mix was a bit muddy, but I 'spose that was what you were after. Could've used a change up for the rhythm or turnaround, but I still nodded the whole way through.
soopington: Oh man, that's a nice vibe you brought out. Real Knx style. The subtle melodic progression is classy but again a bolder change up would've been welcome. How'd you get the lower pitch so smooth on an SP?
eighty9s: Great drums here! Good to hear someone else pick out the bells for their flip too. This was way too short though, wanted to hear you do much more than 2 great loops, this feels like an intro.
OgGhoul: Subtle, digging how you turned the synth into lazers & those drums hit hard, but yeah, this one feels like an intro as well. It builds up then ends too soon.
otbt: Whoah... Dude, I think you're a bit too future for me . Sorry man, these Ras G junk sci-fi sounds do my head in. Nah, this is good but it needs an SP to work right. Props for making this one, it's cool to hear totally different approaches.

Had to vote Davidarcade, dude you nailed it this time! Really digging how well thought through your beat was.

Cheers!

some nice flips here

it came down to eighty9s and OgGhoul for me, I really like those vocal pieces.. eighty9s I just wished that your joint was a littttleeee bit longer, you would've had my vote

that said I voted OgGhoul. Tough decision tho, everyone brought some pretty nice stuff

@unfolding - I used the 404's pitch fx

Teewok - chill, smooth... I like it, seems to just pull you in
davidarcade - this is nuts that skittering siren type sound is filled with tension but hypnotic
asha c - it's weird and... weird, I thought I didn't like it at first but after a couple listens I really like the waving vocal pad thing
Obtainius - kinda odd but nods p good
Chopperman - always comes with the weird flips, kind of hard to get into because of it but once you do it's a pretty relaxing journey
Unfolding: hahaha listening back just have to nod, the synth stuff is a bit too much for me though
janglesoul - could be fairly chill but I can't get past that harsh distortion going on
Marco Grouch - wow this sucks I'm gay and I hate myself what are those stupid clipping hi hats
soopington - ULTIMATE chill, barely concious right now but still just grooving to this
eighty9s - at first I hated that snare but then... I have no idea it grew on me and just worked. also + on the jangle bells I meant to use that both times and I fucking forgot like an idiot
OgGhoul - also a + on the bells. this is a weird one, chill vibes, spook and nods all at the same time
otbt - you cheated ;) tripping me out though so tired, overall I rate it mental breakdown/emotional trauma [nah it was cool]

I voted eighty9s, I feel bad for not voting OgGhoul cause it was so good but I had to vote for someone. after voting I've re-listened to both eighty9s and OgGhoul's submissions quite a few times and half the times I prefer 9s and half the time I prefer Ghouls so I'm calling that a theoretical tie. 2nd place is davidarcade.

I hate writing reviews like this because I feel like when I have to bring up a negative point it's injuring someone's art, and then I'm like "who the fuck cares what I think someone is expressing themselves." but then on the other hand it's fun to review and it forces you to listen closer [maybe I should do the reviews before voting] als oI have no idea what I'm saying I'm pretty much barely awake at this point

Thank u so much!! yayy, my first vote :)

I really enjoyed working with these samples and i think my beat ended up quite nicely. Maybe i need some lowpass on the lo-fi effect, as unfolding said, you are probably right there.

I voted 4 Davidarcade in this one

Hey, really fun and inspiring to hear so many different takes on the same material. It's good to know there's so many roads to take.

Teewok: Really like how you took that fast rhodes-lick and managed to make an upbeat tune, although the original sample was so slow. Jazzy, cool and groovy. Inspiring!

Arcade Swagger: I didn't find a way to let the synth samples into my chops of the song. Seems you took the Really like the groove in the second part of the song.

Asha C: Dark and mysterious and grooves along, still somehow the mood's a little to discomforting to me.

Obtainius: Good groove, cool when the synth bass enters. The "lofi bitcrush" on some sounds is a bit tiring to my ears after a while.

Chopperman: Unusual groove, almost stumbling but never falling over.

Unfolding: Nice beat, really like how the rhodes lick comes through as a sound in the distance. The harmonica-synth I'm not too sure about ;-)

Janglesoul: I take too long until the drums start. Got to work more on my structure and breaks etc. Lots left to learn.

MarcoGrouch: Spooky sounds, but I start longing for some different melody/chord after a while.

Soopington: Really like how those chopped chords blend together so well, still the two (?) main loops get a bit too similar to me. I would have liked some more melodic/chordal contrast there.

eighty9s: Good, cool vibe. Like when the bells come in. Would have been nice with a second part of some kind.

OgGhoul: Good laser beam synth-sounds, and a nice depth to the soundscape with the voice in the distance.

Otbt: Almost a sound collage, right. Artsy and lots of small details

As I've said I'm still a total newbie, I hear a lot of interesting stuff and techniques and I might not be able to tell what is genius tech novelty and what is simply classic.

I vote Teewok because to me it's really melodic and groovy and I can hear it over and over again and still enjoy it!

Thanks for the comments - and whoever voted for me! I'll keep practising and I'll be a little easy on raising the volume using overdrive ;-)

Teewok - masterful shit, as i expected.. got that Teewok feeling / like teens got when the three oclock bell rings ;) i just happened to notice this beat was your 1000th post at the forums. Cheers!

Arcade Swagger - the beep type sounds made me think of a heart monitor. i like the filtering on the hats. also like how the sliced bass matches up. and that transition between beats was seamless. nice piece of work, no doubt

Asha C - eerie vibe.. takes me back in time. somehow cold and warm at the same time.

otbt - wild shit! for a second i thought i had something else playing from another window. very cool flip tho

Beetek - dig this one as well. almost too much lofi ringing for me, but that could just be my surround sound set up.

Unfolding - on point. nice work with all the transitions. well-rounded piece

thegentlekind - awesome intro!! really like the effects at 1:30 also. nice flip

Marco Grouch - love the drum sounds and how you used them. cool distorted outro

baylum - crazy dope!! really feelin the swinging drums

eighty9s - soulful! i dig the rhythmic vinyl crackles. I've tried that in the past. thanks for reminded me to try it again

OgGhoul - So nice I kinda wish it was longer but at the same time appreciate shorter battle beats since they make it less likely for listeners to get tired of the samples.

I vote Baylum a.k.a. Soopington for the mystical vibe summoned.

I'm not a fan of my beat for this round. I rushed it.
I picked up a second job and have been working 60 hours a week for the past couple months. Both are delivery jobs, so music has been keeping me happy enough and fairly sane. Once I save up some money I will cut back my job hours and get back to submitting for these battles but I decided to take a break for a while. I'll still keep up the trophy cabinet though.
Digging for samples is what originally got me into making beats. I've been getting back into it and rediscovering my love for it.
I'll still keep an ear or two on the arena. I learn very much here.

Teewok - flows really well, and has a nice laid back sound. I liked it, but felt like you could of done a little more with it and made it super dope.
davidarcade - good well rounded beat, nice transition and the second part was real dope.
asha c - I think that bass line was my favorite part, I liked how you layered the synth over it. It got a little repetitive, but not bad considering it was a microwave.
Obtainius - Liked this one a lot, I really liked when that synth came in, but felt like it needed something in the low end, a bassline or a nice low kick. The kick got kind of washed out by the hi hat.
Chopperman - Dude these drums were so nice and had an awesome swing to them, it sounded like you used three different hi hats, idk if that was on purpose but it sounded dope. I also really liked what was going on in the background, kind of wish it was a little more present in the the mix.
Unfolding - Damn I was hoping you were gonna flip the other sample. Dope flip like usual though, you mixed this really well, I just don't think I like the sound of the so-606 or something. My only complaint is it would of been cool to hear something different after that first break down at 1:15, just to switch things up a little bit more.
janglesoul - I really liked this man, I thought the intro was real dope and I liked that little clicking hi hat. It sounds like your doing a lot of experimenting, with different effects and stuff. Just keep putting in work man, you'll be where you wanna be in no time.
MarcoGrouch - I was digging this man, I liked how you flipped the rhodes and made it sound really grimy. Would of sounded cool with some bass sounds with some distortion or drive on them. Just wish I was a little less repetitive, but it was a microwave.
soopington - some real solid work man, I really like the whole sound of this beat. It would of been cool to hear a break down or a transition somewhere, because it gets a little repetitive. Besides that, really cool.
eighty9s - Nice vides, I like the drums and everything fits together nicely. Wish you would of done a little more with it.
otbt - definitely some futuristic sounds, it kind of sounds like a bad acid trip, but in a good way. It sounds pretty cool, but it seems like theres a little to much going on.

This one was really hard for me to choose, lots of great really different flips. My vote would probably change depending on the mood I was in, but I had to give it to soopington.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, glad some of you liked it

thats good to hear man, I've spent the last month really working on my drums, learning how to layer them and what not them and what not. Snares are still pretty tricky for me.

Alright well I haven't seen a triple tie before. You guys could all just pick some samples and rules and have one of you post the next challenge. Or you three can duke it out, and flip another beat real fast using the other sample no one used, due Sunday, and we could vote again. Idk just an idea, any other opinions? We could just get the next one started.

Sounds good, try to get ahold of the other guys. If you can't I guess you could just post it yourself.
