My favorites were Runme Raw (great artwork and that beat is wonderfully insane) IIIII (beats that good should last longer if you ask me!) Ellaguru (splendid crispyness) Seyz (nice use of that simple bass line) Age (I especially dig the use of the bass sample at :56 and 1:35) and Asha C (started off dope and got doper and doper) I enjoyed and learned from them all! My vote goes to Asha C. Runner up is Runme Raw.

writing these as i listen...
EISENDRAHT- short and sweet, that pitched vocal loop is mesmerizing. clean simple drum beat. that loop towards the end is nice, hella effects
SPACETRIP-weird demented feel, intersting choice with the chops, hypnotic.
ROKR203- nice bass line, nice chop choice. cool drum sounds, nice use of that rattle sound.
ASHA C- smooth feel, nice chops, good use of layers, clean drum sound. i like the reversed stuff, and the bass line is nice
RUNMERAW- nice lofi sound, cool intro, sick bass line. fat ass drum sound, wonky feel is nice. nice variation throughout.
CHOPPERMAN404- this ones got my head bobbin. good drum sound. nice use of effects on the chops. hard level chop. smooth feel.
IIII-everything about this is sick. EVERYTHING. flawless in every regard. thats all i can say
UNSIGND- nice feel. smooth chops, hella chill. great drum sound, nice little changeup in the middle, its like two awesome and different feels mashed up into one sick beat.
ELLAGURU- nice pitching, totally transformed the sample. this beat is a trip. im LOVING the drum sound. sick as fuuuck. really feelin this one. masterful display of sp skills.
SEYZ- nice use of the ride sample. cool feel. nice chops. bass line is dope. nice use of tiny little sample bits. beautifully simple and catchy.
AGE- nice reverse samples. cool drum pattern. interesting hihat work. tasteful use of effects. this has a really dreamy vibe to it. awww shit, sick changeup, then it comes right back to the first loop and its like new again haha

i cast my vote for IIIII. that beat was just sick and thats all there is to it.

My vote goes to IIIII.
Sorry, but im not able to write to the other ones, because im on a very low bandwidth connection right now. I´ve listened to them all but thats some days ago.. can´t recreate all the impressions i had out of my head...
Maybe i´ll add my impressions next time...

peace

PS: very nice beats from all of you,i really enjoyed this battle.

I think that the original material provided quite a challenge this time, good work to everybody and keep it up !

Runme_Raw: Squirmhead Noise Spirit at the river...
Too long and unfocused, imho: I could not find a trace of any structure or a proper beat until 2:02, when a very nice loop started, with notable use of the bass... but then eventually everything returned to chaos.

spacetrip: SQUIRMY RIVER
Interesting beat, not much variation.
The filter that starts at 0:16 introduces distortion on the right channel (??)

eisendraht: spbattle121
Perhaps more of an intro than a full song: there's not much, but what's in there is pretty good, I liked the eerie feeling overall and the use of the sound at 0:24.
Odd silence at 0:20, though.

seyz: Seyz - SpBattle-121
Quite minimal, but I like how every single part (bass/drums/vocals/strings) joins in as the song evolves.
Very well sounding too, imho.

rokr2o3: Sam wow
A mysterious, anti-gravitational intro followed by a loose and anticonventional loop, everything sounds very charming and twisted.

asha c: Asha C battle 121
Impressive intro with a nice evolving loop, good work on the drums at 1:00 onwards to create further variation.
Unfortunately it sounds a little too saturated to me, especially in the second half.

unsignd: Skwurm - Beat Battle 121
Nice first beat, followed by a very good loop at 0.34: at 1:07 the lead string does not seem to bind too well with the previous one, though.
At 1:29 it's back to the previous beat with some nice variations - except those volume drops that do not sound too musical imho.

IIIII: Thirsty's Child (SP Battle 121)
I'd say this is an impressive attempt to make everything cohexist, and create something original.
Nice integration of the bass with the beat - the ethereal vocal fragments sound nice (but maybe too prominent).
At 0:46 that horrible sound is a little too isolated.

Chopperman404: Eternity (SP battle 121)
Very clean and refined sounding throughout.
Nice classy beat, good choice of the strings in the background, and I liked those wah/scratch-like 'lead' sounds.
Awesome use of the voice samples at 1:10, flawlessly resolving into the ending part.
The picked-strings at 0:46 feel a little too much on the beat, making everything sound martial to me (but maybe this is what you were after).
From 1:10 the song seems to miss some blend, as if the melodic and the drum lines progressed in parallel, perhaps because the drums are a little too prominent.
A little bit of variation in the drums of the final part would have been nice, too.

LAZERBEAR: Writhing creek
The intro vocals sound too harsh, the following loop is good but feels a little basic.
At 0:37 things change: the airy strings loop (not dissimilar to Skwurm's 0:34 one) is perfectly matched by the pulsating beat, great job.
I also really liked that subtle, guitar-like sound you used at 1:12 onwards, it binds very musically with the underlying material and enriches the loop.
I'm not to convinced by the use of the effects, though: sometimes the sounds seemed to be 'suffucated' by the filter.

AGE: E0000008 (SP BATTLE 121)
The vocal intro is followed by a shivering, emotional and dreamy loop... impressive job.
The use of the bass loop by itself at 0:56 feels gutsy, but I'm not too sure about it.
As far as sounds are concerned, the song often feels too harsh: the vocals and the part at 1:26 are so distorted they are unlistenable.

Ellaguru: Ellaguru-sp121 (gets my vote)
Original, angular melodic lines in the intro/outro.
When the vocals hit at 0:17 you know something special is about to happen: the following vocal loop is memorable and the straight, fierce nature of the beat is exponentially emphasized by the shimmering and glassy, almost cutting sound production.
Hard to forget.

To me the samples were difficult to flip, yet it was a close call between Chopperman, IIIII and Ellaguru:

Chopperman - Really liked the drums, at first I was like "Ahh nice loop." After that you added another sound, that was cool aswell. But then the switch up came and the vocal came in and I felt enlightened! Well done.

IIIII - Same here, I was like "Ahh nice loop", really liked the string stabs you added. What made me really like it were the sounds you let in just once. Great job aswell.

Ellaguru - At first I found it kind of strange, then some arrangement came in with the string thingies (no idea what instrument it is), and as soon as I heard the vocal sample I knew this one was gonna be it. Tight drums and percussion. Great vocal chops.

With this being said. My vote goes to Ellaguru.

thanks. nice criticism too.
ps that "strange instrument" are some strings pitched/filtered and played together together with the 505 at different pitches.

If anyone's interested I started a set on soundcloud for battle beats that I rhyme over. Only a couple so far but I plan on rocking them all eventually.

You are right. :D
Normally i make my music with fruity loops. (got my sp 2 months now)
When work on the pc with a DAW , i always want it sound clean and ready for some vocals and recording etc.....very normal and lame structure.
But on the sp i am on another world
On the sp i work with the total opposit idea ( Raw and Chaos).

But yes your right , in the next battle i will try to keep more headbounce instead of headchaos...
(sorry for my english i am from hOLLAND)
thnx for the feedback man. :D

just wanted to say this is my first battle, and i'm super new to the 404, let alone making beats. i know didn't have any variation and the chops were super weird, but next time i will try to improve! it's so tight listening to a few sounds and hearing everyone get super creative with it. thanks to whoever listened, appreciate it!

eisendraht- SWEEEET INTRO, loving the simplistic drums, real pounding and stark. The vocal drone gives a real eerie, grinding and disturbing effect. Like I want it to stop but its not annoying, just powerful. i feel it couldve kicked in a bit more just to give variation. Good job.

spacetrip- Creepy intro, The conflicting mood between the delicate guitar and harsh, horror movie esque strings gave it a real creepy, tense mood. The beat was sweet. Again would have really been boosted with a little more variation.

rokr2o3- another creepy intro, another great contrast between the delicate guitar and the creepy drums, particularly the rattle. Would fit a western zombie movie "the good, the bad and undead". Nice, subtle use of the vocal sample.

Runme_Raw- Nice use of the vocal sample for the intro. Great use of the bassline, had a real disturbing quality to it. Great use of the bitcrush effect too. Although this track was kind of disjointed and glitchy it was also a head nodder. Great use of the rattle too.

Chopperman- Cool intro, loved the drums. Nice little melody going on. I felt that everything apart from the drums could have been a bit louder just to sit nicely at the forefront with the beat. Great use of the vocal sample too.

IIIII- As always-SWEEET. Really booming drum sound, the snare sounded awesome. Good use of the vocal sample. The echo guitar sounded really cool and I love how you snuck the roar in there haha. Real head nodder.

unsignd- Nice intro, drums came in really nicely. Love the simplistic and laid back feel. Great use of the samples to create melody, was a really unexpected change at 0:29. I feel a smoother transition would have been cool but it was also a nice surprise to have it change like that. I like how you had the guitar meandering around in the background there.

Ellaguru Nice use of the sample chops at the start, had an almost 16bit computer feel to it, like the Sega computers. Great use of the vocal sample at the start.

SEYS- Sweet little intro, the beat is simple yet cool and the bass line is cool. Pretty minimalistic but works. Maybe more meldy would have pushed it forward a little.

Lazerbear- WOOOW the vocals came in a bit hard, I think just too much compression. Came in with a boom. Great use of the vocal sample. Really enjoyed what you did with that. Good use of the DJFX Looper effect too. Good use of the double kick sound. Great beat but for my taste it was a little too over compressed or possibly too much filter where the sound ducks.

AGE- Great use of the voice as an intro then boom kicked in sweet. Booming beat, great use of reverse hat? hit. Had a great melody. The subtle backwards effect worked great, complimenting the drums not overpowering them. LOVED the bass interlude at 0:56.Great turnaround at 1:25. It took a real sinister turn and transitioned nicely back into the original loop.

SɅƔΞɅH!- Ashame you used your own snare and didn't read the arena rules. Nice warbley lofi feel using the VINYL SIM fx. Good use of the rattle. Some good DJFX looper being used. Went total freakout, paranoid and dark towards the end. Great use of the vocal effect too.

IIIII wrote:

HAHAHA thanks IIIII, cant believe I didnt notice it, now I listen back its driving me nuts haha.

Anyway gonna have to go with AGE, its the backwards sheeeeeit: gets me everytime, I really loved this track. Was a tough decision between AGE, IIIII and rokr2o3. Good work all round though.
