Up to $5 worth of purchased records... no giveaways/freebies. Must b something u purchased in person from a place that sells records.

15 minutes of original music arranged in mixtape/LP fashion.

Full Marathon - no outside drums or bass, all SP.

Half Marathon - outside drums & bass OK. Additional hardware OK.

Thumbs up on outside acapellas for both whole & half.

Timeframe is flexible. Shooting for 4 weeks... so somewhere around 7/21.

The main goal is to make it to the finish line! At the end of this we will have a vote to determine the dopest mix, but we should all have projects to post and share across various outlets... ie, post it on Bandcamp and get a few bucks for ur efforts! This means that there can b a potential cash prize for the winner, depending on how u look at it... and ideally a few dollars of that name-your-own-price casholla for everyone who participates.

Anyone who wants to go in on this please state ur intent to participate in the thread below.

I would be interested in the half marathon, for being able to use additional hardware.

So now I need to find a scratch record for $1 somewhere. Goodwill and Arc don't let me down.

I'm down :!:

I'm ok with either marathon........
BUT........ if I had to choose,
I would prefer the half marathon.

I think it could still be challenging
& fun, plus better quality beats.

I LOVE drums & finding great drums
in the $5 record stack might be hard.
Plus if we can't use outside bass I
predict a lot of beats w/o bass.

Just some thoughts.
Whatever is decided I'm down for it.

Just to clarify, by no outside drums you mean only using the drums from the records. correct?

@ Crane - Hell yeah. I’m actually thinking about the half myself so I can throw down drums & potentially some bass on the Alesis SR18. It’s going to b a lot of music to make... having a trusty drum machine on hand will b a big help... the EMX-1 also comes to mind.

@ Sharris - All good. It’s open for each person to choose between Marathon or half.

@Selim - U got it. Hardcore sample flippin.

Whole marathon or half, it’s gonna take some endurance to reach the finish line.

Aaaah that's cool.
Just curious....does that mean 2 separate battles?
1 battle for the full timers, another for the halfers?

I've never made a mixtape. Farthest I've gone was like 3 beats & it was horribly transitioned. I've always wanted to make 1, but haven't been disciplined enough. This marathon is just what I need

It’s more of a challenge than a battle to be honest. There will b one final vote w extra consideration given to production methods... mainly whole vs half, but this is where each voter can place emphasis on whatever they feel is significant.

The main thing is for each of us to put in the work to get to the finish.

@ Crane - Scratch vinyl is def an instrument... save the $5 for sample material. 8)

Speaking of sample material... how is the $5 limit treating u guys? I’m going through neglected stacks of my home record collection and valuing them based on price stickers. I was already in the process of going through my collection and listening/organizing so this just made sense. If 5 seems tight we could loosen it to $10. I’ve got a bunch of .50-$2 records, so 5 shouldn’t b a problem. Anyone struggling to find stuff could hit up most thrift shops for $1 records. Get yourself some Boots Randolph... maybe a little Barbra Streisand.

I got a ton of $1 a piece vinyl back when the Goodwill by my place was sellin them for a dollar. 5 records is good.

$10 would be cool tho too.......if it goes to $10, I might go full marathon.

Hey now, the rules are whatever vinyl you can buy for $5. It's not like the goodwill is selling quality shit in my area. I just picked up an 8 pack of pure shit for $4. So I'm ready to rock.

Either which way as long as this rule still stands we should have some good mixes.

You had mentioned four weeks for the time frame, What should be considered the starting date? If you do the end of the month that would give people that are not near record stores time to find some crap from garage sales or thrift stores.

$4 dowwa make you howwa!!

Damn! Way to stertch ur dollar.

I'm culling through a bunch of records I bought for .50 ea a couple years ago from ABC Music in Portland... double checking prices on discogs to keep it under $5. Much more curated... let me know if that's objectionable. I think I'll b good w these three... going for the half marathon.

Let's shoot for the end of July? Sounds like plenty of time now, but I think it could end up being pretty tight.

Been working off and on on this spitting out microwaves from records i got in a bargain-bin out on the street outside an antique store last week... I've already got like 10 or 15 flips clocking in at 20-30 minutes. Do i need to self-edit, like how strict is the 15 minute rule gonna be if the shit is dope, ya hear me? ;)
