Hi there everybody.. see I was just listening to some modern day records and after messing around a bit I was just wondering. How legal is it to chop a sample from say Jay-z or 2Pac or whatever other musician? When is a sample okey to use and when it's not? I mean, all those ancient jazz or classic LPs are used all the time for samples, baselines and melodies... where's the line that you can't cross so to speak hehehe? |

-legally you cant sample anything copywritten without permission. but producer/diggin ethical expectations vary - just as long as something is used creatively then its good to me. Oh yeah, stealling drums from a hip hop or electronic music is weak. |

Okey, so basically you need to make sure that it's not that noticeable that it was copied... I mean, who's going to hear that I've used a split second of a melody line and turned it into a snare... though at the moment I also have a really cool sample reversed. That one will be easy to find out from which song it comes when you reverse it back again..... Yeah, I won't steal beats, it's pointless if you want to create your own feel in a song.. |
