yooo if you wanna get into crafting your own sounds, definitely need to check out Hot Sugar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAGhx3gqYp0

as far as 'field-recordings' go, hes the dopest to do it

noisey did a small documentary on him
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orBQp6a ... 6vDiXYQ-58

he can come off as pretty arrogant
but the dude has amazing talent

My personal drum sound varies from song to song.

What works for one track will not necessarily work for another..

However, I've developed specific techniques and tricks that I use regularly..

On the sp808, I like to chop up whole beats in a loop or break. I usually pitch them down using the "CLUB DJ" effect which also ads a slight delay to the drums. This effect along with the chopped up and gated drum beats make it easy to create some interesting grooves.

For example,

Check out this drum break from QOTSA "Turnin' On The Screw"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITPudAhXPuI

It's straight up boom bap with a tambourine playing in the background.

As soon as I heard it I knew I had to sample it so I recorded it on to my 808 and left it there until I found the right sample to play it with and came up with this song;

I never really sought out to create this particular combination, it just happened organically and it sounded decent to me.

Here's a video of me performing it too btw;

Cheers! :mrgreen:

Yeah man, I wasn't even looking for drum breaks or samples when I heard this. My buddy just had a brand new LP of this album and had no record player to hear it so I put it on for him and sure enough, my hip-hop state of mind heard that break and...

:idea:

Can't read all that...

Put batteries in 404 or turn on zoom recorder

Press record

Go to kitchen and pull out the pots and pans
Coffee grinder
Open and close the oven.
Drop forks

Tap riddims and filter tings
Takes 5 mins and is more OG than all those Madlib alchemist sample packs
Rinse repeat
Its a different sound everytime.

That can be arranged.

so it took forever to collect drum breaks. I finally decided to buy a couple drum break records....I wanted some good drums. I'm really glad I did too.

I either layer drum breaks with other drum breaks or layer them with drum synths......or both.......Of course I chop up the drum breaks so sometimes I'll combine sounds from like 4 different drum breaks.....sometimes I layer drum breaks with sounds I make myself (clapping, punching or stomping on wood, you can get sounds from almost anything) or my brothers beat boxing......eq &/or filter to taste........I try layering sounds that compliment each other, like a synth kick with a big boom, short decay & a kick from a drum break, long decay......I just go by ear..... I use my own shakers sometimes, also have some wood stick things that have a cool sound (I use for background percussion).

+1, for me, drums it is all about collecting drums from breaks (mostly soul records), eq, filter, start-end and layering
Parker Jordan drum pack n.1 available on the thread
PJ drum pack n.2 soon

Yea, exactly! I actually get a lot of drum breaks from classic rock, but I have a lot of classic rock records. I just bought some more records I'm hoping have some breaks on them..... fuck....it takes forever collecting breaks from random records....... such a great feeling finding a drum break tho. I need to buy some more soul records, I only have a few. Maybe that's where I'll find a drum gold mine. Like I stated above, it's taking me sooo long to collect drum breaks from my collection, I finally bought a couple drum break records to use as well.
