I just downloaded and upgraded the firmware in my SP-555 to version 1.04. It made cards work that previously didn't. Two 2gb Sandisk Ultras that didn't work were then formatted in Windows 7 to default Fat at 32 kilobytes allocation size and hey presto the Sp-555 read and formatted them. Integral Igb fixed. Viking ones still work. Here's hoping that these issues won't be such a problem in the future

Roger that! I've been trying to get CF cards to work on my SP 555 for a while now but nothing worked. I had the same problem reported by so many users, the machine froze up during the boot sequence. Yesterday I downloaded the 1.04 upgrade from Roland to my PC and then followed the instructions to upgrade the firmware on the SP 555 and hey presto, everything worked like a charm after that! Incidentally I used the 2GB Sandisk Ultra CF card. Thanks for the post ibrowze :)

I updated and I still can't get my SanDisk Ultra 2GB card to work with it.
Did I do the update wrong maybe?

Okay...

So I just bought the 555 and fucking love it...
However... why do these god damn samplers always have such shit storage reliability. My akai with zip disks was a nightmare... the sp12 was a whole other story. Anyways.

I have the latest firmware and I am formating the cf cards through the sp-555.

Different cards "kind of" work... one will all of sudden lose the samples... BUT, they come back by powering it off and then on again.
Another one samples and then plays just a little bitch i mean glitch sound back.
I see someone mentions formating in win7 with certain settings.
Hmmmm... shouldn't formating on the 555 be the best option?
OR do you format the card in win7 and THEN format in the machine?
Also I should mention that these cards are not sandisk... one is a dane elec from BLACKs camera... another one is de-lux brand... let's just say not the fanciest cards around... but god damn, it's not easy to find a 2gb cf card.

What's the chance of roland updating firmware to take larger card sizes?

I saw someone mention an ebay site to order the sandisk ultras with the grey on top...

Why the hell is the machine that damn picky?
Or please let it just be me... and maybe the win7 format will work?

Please sampling gods... help me.

Mad Love,

Amanda Huginkiss

Machine is picky because it needs very good speed - pretty much the best CF can offer is only just enough to stream the samples all at once direct from the card/record in realtime..

As for increasing the storage size, not going to happen unfortunately it isnt that easy (or there wouldn't have been a limit to the size to begin with)

Most of these cards are quite fast though... I just find it hard to believe that these other high speed cards won't work...

So the question is:

Where and what?

What exact card would you recommend?
and
Where can I buy it?

I'm jonsing to build some kits and save em up!

Thanks a million for responding so quick as well!

Can this update be transferred through USB? Or is it a midi only deal? I freeze up 555 when I put my card in, and it is for sure the right card, wondering what could be wrong.

Hey, Just figured it out.
http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/dld.cfm?PRODUCT=SP-555&iRcId=1812362&dsp=1
that is the step by step tutorial how to do it. My sandisk ultra 2gb was not working, brand new. I did this update, and now it works like a charm. Make sure you install the drivers for your sp 555 properly, or else it will not show up on the midi manager thing they make you download.

that Sandisk 2GB ULTRA Compact Flash CF Card still doesn't work for me after the update. It will work for a while, but twice now when I'm cutting new samples it will freeze. Then i reboot the machine and all my samples are gone and it wants to format the card. Anyone else still having this issue after the update?
