Is it just me or does the compressor on the 555 blow horse balls compared to the 303?

statements like this make me hesitant about grabbing a 555. I have been a 303 user and lover for a long time now and mine conked out, the compressors on the 303 are MONSTERS both the vinyl sim comp and the regular comp fx12. the 555 has many features that seem great but if it doesn't have that gritty compressor then it's all for shit imo

this cat Admbmb on here was saying that the vinyl sim on the 555 has no compressor (?)...and that there is a regular compressor (a la fx12 on the 303/404) and a "lo fi compressor" which is apparently similar in nature to the vinyl sim comp...I'm still hung up on this 555 compressor issue and I don't think I'll be able to convince myself until I actually get on one.

I have a 555 this is my first sampler I have ever owned so I may not be accurate. The vinyl sim, and lo-fi comp work great on the 555. The straight up compression that I hear everyone praise on the 303 and 404 (which is efx b1 I believe on the 555) is hot garbage. I have tried to use it and it does nothing whatsoever for me, in my opinion its worthless. I am a noob and could be wrong though (maybe im not tweaking it right) but I doubt it. If anyone with more experience on this has any input please share.

Here you go. Took the time to show you how the SP-555 compressor sounds with before and after.

I think you're confusing the 303 & 404 a bit..

the ones people like are:

303 - comp
404 - vinyl sim comp

Thx a lot for taking the time. That Lo Fi compressor sounds like a monster...so towards the end when you were saying compressor did you mean regular or the lo fi joint? that was a lil confusing but you could hear clear as day on the samp at the beginning that the Lo Fi comp is a monster

Yes, that is the LoFi on the break at the end. If you go to the roland site, you can get a copy of the manual to read a description of the effects.

Also, when i used the regular compressor it was in regular mode. Evidently there is a way to use it in limit mode (still figuring this thing out).

Having a blast with this thing.

Nice, thanks a lot ! I have a 303 but I'm getting my 555 tomorrow thru the mail  . I learned what compression is for in recording but as an effect I see that is makes the sound, sound a little fatter.
Can you guys explain the purpose of the compressor effect so I can know if I'm missing anything ?

basically compression levels out the sound so you can turn it up without the peaks disorting, making the overall sound much fatter. man compression is like a bottomless pit followed by an endless maze, there is so much to it, different kinds of compressions for different types of sounds and stages of mixing a track - but in essence it allows you to add character/coloration and some extra punch to your sounds. as far as SPs go, that really heavy in your face you sound on the tracks is usually heavy use of vinyl sim comp or the regular comp effect

I tried the 555 compressor on straight breaks and it is without a doubt no question beefing up the sound. I may have just been talking from experience where I already compressed something with a lo-fi comp and then tried to use the regular comp or maybe to many effects before trying compression. I dont know.... either way this compressor sounds great.
