The windows 8 driver works fine but, after upgrading to windows 8.1 the SP-555 no longer is recognized with USB. Tried reinstalling it with compatibility mode, but no luck. I've searched the internet.... not much luck. Looks like Roland only provides drivers for windows 8, but not 8.1 :(

Has anyone been successful in getting the SP-555 USB working under win 8.1....or do I need to just stick to win 8 or win 7?

I don't have a 555 but I made in the past a driver mod for sp606.
This time I think it's easier (a simple text modification) BUT it's untested.
Proceed with your own RISC...

I simply added on the inf file :

Code:
[Roland.NTamd64.6.3]
;; Windows8.1 <--added (sp-forums)
%RDID0072DeviceDesc%=RDID0072Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00C5 ; SP-555

Can you test it?

Ah cool! I was actually looking for something like that in the device settings, but didn't find any info like that.

I will test it when I get home or maybe first tomorrow.

Did you have success with the 606? I think this could be plausible since it's only a x.1 version difference. :)

On 606 it worked ,although it was complete different story:

If a driver exists for vista_64bit there is a big chance it will work on windows up to 8.1...

Unfortunately it did not work, it didn't even want to have me connect my hardware. It just cut me off and wanted me to uninstall the software :/

Do NOT try using the setup file. Install the inf file manually...

Ok so I've gotten as far as getting the hardware identified after installing the inf file - thank you :) . I would really like to convert my recorded sample with the sample converter, but the sp-555 doesn't get recognized so I can't get access to the files.. any idea what to do?

Glad it works :D

As far for the software I can't help you. Some random thoughts:
-Reboot the computer and try
-Run the utility in compability mode (windows 7)
-Install the roland utility again in compability mode (for windows 7) and
run again in compability mode (windows 7)

The problem is I don't have a 555 to help...

Hi Magnuzoid,
I though that sp-555 could connect as a usb mass storage (like 606) but after
READING SP-555 manual:

SP-555 Wave Converter is a tool that converts samples on a
CompactFlash card formatted for the SP-555 to WAV/AIFF
files on your computer, and vice versa.
In order for you to use SP-555 Wave Converter, you’ll need a
CompactFlash card, and a CompactFlash card reader for your
computer.

So apparently the driver is meant for PC/MAC usb audio and you have to use a CF card reader. You can find plenty and cheap on eBay or your local store..
Happy sampling :)

Ugh, I just keep feeling more and more stupid for each time you write! I usually read my manuals, but thank you so much anyways!
I'll see if I can find one - would really be awesome if it used the more modern flash cards like in cameras, 'cause then I could just put it in the computer, but that's a minor issue. :)

Have a nice day!

No worries!
http://sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=21574
I used Type I CF adapter to SD card for 606 so it should also work for 555. So if you have to buy a CF reader you could try finding an adapter (it really MUST be type I ) and a SD card.
The SD card could be up to 2Giga but I found a workaround to format bigger cards and they are recognised properly by the SP...
