What do you guys think about doing this for the SP-555? It's for a 12v guitar pedal, but I don't see why this wouldn't work...

A portable SP-555 would be deadly

do it, if it works let me know. Might waanna try it out on some cheap piece of something electronic that takes 12 v too, just to see if it works and no risk of blowing out your 555. But if it works, im totally getting it.

we did something similair for the sp-303/st-224 (thanks to the st224 forums too) and it works/ed. those 2 samplers accept 9v and 500ma (if i rememeber weel). so we have something like 5 or 6 hours with that method! personally i used reachargable batteries.
check the 303 section if you want.
good luck!

Well I went ahead and got some stuff..remembered the 555 is actually 9V and those battery packs are closer to 40 bucks for some reason, but I think it will give a good long charge and be worth it....will report back with results.

yeah man anything that takes a DC power supply can be run off a battery plugged into the power plug, provided it is of the same voltage. just make sure u get the polarity of the connector right!

As it says on the site, batteries are measured in milliamp-hours, or how many milliamps it can provide for one hour. The SP uses a 500ma power supply but it would actually draw significantly less than that.. you would need to measure to know exactly, but you take the number of mA it draws, and see how many times that fits into the batteries capacity to figure out how long it would last.

eg 500mA draw on a 2000mAh battery would last 4 hours (ish).

Also in most cases voltage does not have to be exactly identical, it can be 'around about' because most devices have voltage regulators in them... I've used RC Car batteries (7.2V) on 9V equipment quite a bit.

(slaps head)
Glad most devices have voltage regulators....I've had my universal power supply for the Sp555 set to 12v since I got it years ago

I think this battery pack I got will give about 8 hrs (!) at 9V 500ma.

Yeh I just got on ebay and got the 9V battery pack (like for CCTV, field recording), for some reason it was like 38 bucks, but I think it has a very long runtime.

Like this guy:

hey blavatsky. so is this still working for you? any tips? did you just buy the battery pack? what about the reverse polarity thing that guy mentioned?

would you recommend anything from this list?

thanks!

Post subject:  Re: Rechargeable Battery Pack for SP-555????

polarity is just about which wire (+ / -) is connected to which part of the plug.

Theres a diagram on the back of the SP usually, looks something like this

"+" ---C o-- "-"

imagine the o is inside the C.
the 'C' bit is the 'ring'. the 'o' bit is the 'tip'. So in this case the tip is negative. So you want the negative battery wire connected to the tip of the plug.

great thanks. but do i even need to worry about polarity issues if i buy this guy?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Black-5V-9V ... 2574d4cf71

is it just a matter of plugging the 555 into the 9v of this pack?

^ that is the pack i have, and yes you'll need the little $4 reverse polarity plug too

Thing has been working like a charm, just remember to keep it charged so you don't 'go dark' in the middle of a good session.

I had no idea these battery packs existed until I visited SP-Forums.com
Thanks guys!

This is my rig at the moment :) (+M-AUDIO AV40 reference speakers)
Korg MicroKorg XL+, Korg MicroSampler, Electro Harmonix 45000 Looper, Boss BR-800, Roland SP-555 , Roland SP-404sx. [Jamman Looper & all others not pictured]
Waiting on an MPC 1000 in the mail, :D it will be installed where the headphones are. SP-404sx & MicroKorg XL+ bought new, all others cheap used eBay or Craigslist trade

Here is my current mobile setup.. :!:

Both Korg keyboards and the 555 run off a single battery. One charge (approx 8-12 hours) will last for more than 6 hours with the above connected. That's the longest I had the setup running with sounds coming continuously from all three (before I turned everything off). Also, the battery is great with my Roland FP-2 12v 2A keyboard, which has built-in speakers & line in for these guys. I use it for my 8) outdoor gigs with an EHX 45000, both powered from the single battery with stock cords. With a splitter, I can run my entire studio setup off one battery pack (including FP-2 [for speakers], USB Hub[fan, light X 2, & recording with/charging cell phone] lol).

The SP-555 runs excellent off this battery pack alone.
I would guess using the microphone input in Phantom power mode would drain the battery quicker, I have had no issues.

Here are the things I have connected to the SP-555 - -
:!: Note: I am in NO WAY affiliated with these eBay sellers. :!: These were simply the cheapest variants of the products I have purchased at the time of posting & tested/verified to work with the SP-555..... :!:

You can find the battery HERE, and the polarity switch adapter HERE
I also recommend THESE TIPS for those who own devices from different manufacturers. Both Korgs need Adapter Type "G" (yellow tip) from this kit (or similar)

Let me know your experiences or other battery setups for the 555 !
Love goes out to everyone making use of these tools & doing their own thang!
Love also to all the 'nay sayers' for keeping ideas fresh and conceptions re-analyzed.

Mods of SP-Fourms - please don't can me for advertising pertinent, useful eBay links!
