I haven't got the chops just yet to lay down the funk on beats. My question is: are patterns available from SP users? Or is it all sample beats that I'll be sampling? Do you get the same effect as a drum machine where you can scroll through the kits while the pattern is playing? I've been reading the forum for a week now. You guys are like ninjas on your responses. Makes feel like I'll be a pro in no time.

Nope, there aren't any "kits" to scroll through. You can only sequence the sounds you sample into it. There aren't any preset patterns for SP's. It's theoretically possible for someone who has the same model SP as you to copy the data from their card and send it to you. It's not like a drum machine though.

Your very welcome. You got a good attitude about it, it's nice to see some one willing to put in some work.

That's crazy, I never thought of it but we could load up sp-303 and sp-404 sequenced drum pattern data to share with everybody. Also to answer your question, you can make a drum pattern in the sequencer with your drums sounds on pad 1(kick) pad2(snare) pad3(hi-hat) and when it's sequenced how you like it you can just load different drum sounds on those pads and the pattern will now play those in the sequence you made. hope that makes sense to you.
