Can someone recommend a nice compact mic of high quality to use with my 404 - out and about in the field?

Basically just for recording anything. . percussive samples mostly I guess, but also ambience.

Willing to spend a bit but not exactly looking for top of the line here. . just something that wont sound like a white-noise machine, and as compact as possible too.

:) thanks

wow . . . I was kinda thinking cheap meant less than $100

If i grab that I'll have plenty left over for other toys  ...actually come to think of it I think I'll just hang onto the extra and get a digital camera that WASNT made in the 20th century... lol people's mobile phones have more resolution than my digital camera :(

Ive been using a second hand 50 dollar Shure SM57, and it sounds brilliant on the 404. Especially when recording guitars.

nah, thats why i like the 57, its gritty and adds alot of character, while also capturing sound sources very accurately and clearly.

my bad on the assumption, but personally I would use software and midi to make anything other than hip hop.

S'all good :) I guess you could say there is some vague connection with what I'm into and gritty hiphop instrumentals.

I'm into live performance of electronic music. . . and in this respect, hardware has an advantage in that it doesn't look like you're checkin' your emails all through the show... you're actually tweakin knobs and pushing buttons rather than peering into a little grey box.

The reason I'm running an SP-404 as part of my setup is its relatively cheap, and battery operated.... MPC500 would suit my needs alot better, but just dont like to invest that much money in a single piece of gear. . would rather spread the load over several pieces of cheaper gear.
