the xr20 got some very nice drums
it has 3 tracks as for the dr202 but you can mute/unmute like on mpc/sp505/606 (not every single pad i mean). it has some synths for bass, and in general its sound is more professional than the dr202 but this is not forcely a plus.
i wasn't deep into editing on it so i can't tell you if editing is better/faster than on the dr202...

I'm thinking of getting one of these... Probably just wishful thinking but, is it possible to punch-in on the 202, or does the sequencer always have to count down first, like on the 404?

when you hit record the dr-202 goes into record mode and the metronom starts clicking (unless you turned the metronom down) but it doesn't start recording until you hit play. so you can hit play and a drumpad at the same time and it immediately starts recording (with or without metro).
but you have to stop a pattern to switch into record mode. so no real punch-in.

Thanks, guess I could go the double tempo route...

well for me it was either the alesis sr 16 , or akai xr 20,

I just need a drum machine with lots of sounds, I used to use the mc 505 for that, I know the xr 20 has more banging hiphop and crunk sounds, but maybe to crunk, the dr 202 has the old school kits im looking for. same about as a mc 505. anyway, its mostly for drums and to have lots of drums whenever I need them , so I dont have to dig forever to make a little kit. thats why i ordered one, so it should be here in about a week. I hope it works good for what i need it to do, now I will have sp 202 and dr 202, I think there kinda meant to go together. well it looks like it, and they line up nice side by side.

i had the sp202 and still keep the dr202. yes they meant to go together (the EXT track was meant to drve the sp202 or ms1 via midi) like other grooveboxes (the yamaha an200/dx200 + the su200, the korg electribe seres+the es1 etc) it was a trend; one of the few things that disappoint me is the fact that roll is not midi-outed

i dont really care about or need midi, because i prefer to do everything in the 404, but i understand the purpose for midi to keep things in synch and to get live tweak out of seperate machines. but ive mever really been able to get a live jam going with midi. i remember like 10 years ago, using midi out on the computer to control a 303 from the computer. and to use a keyboard to control a mc 505 and an asr x . but midi ing up a mc 505 to ASRX is just a waste of time, where you can just sample something and have it ready faster than midi ing everything upto gether and trying to finish a song quick. or recalling a song of 10 machines midi'd together. thats why i dont mess with mascine or rennasaince, because i never have a good enough computer to run all the plugins, and you can dig thru files just as fast on the mpc 1000 and sounds better. i dont see the hype about those controllers you can use anything to trigger midi and it usually is a waste of time for me, but i see videos on youtube of cats with like a tb 303 and a tr 606 with midi and they jam out hardcore, I think those 2 go together the best for midi.

but yeah the 202 is so basic might as well try and control the sp 202 with midi from the dr 202 sequencer. I might have to sample the drums to make them grimey and maybe sample everything from the dr 202 into the sp202 and then control the sp202 samples with midi . and they should all stay in time it should be ok. I dont use a computer for anything for music. except multi tracking audio sometimes.

but in certainly will be neat aswell to explore the unknown realms of
the dr 202 sample rompler banks.

sorry but, the tb303 doesn't even got midi, the tr606 controlls tb303 via CV (electricity), very old school way to do syncing, but i think i see waht you mean. anyway i jam sometimes with machines via midi, it's cool when you find the right way to do it, depending on the machines themselves

actually, they use rolands proprietary pre-midi din-24 sync
roland and korg both had din sync before midi, iirc its why the midi panel chose din connectors despite midi only using 3 wires

aight I finally got mine, showed up in like 2 days after I ordered it.
so it didnt come with an adapter, I was like oh big deal it comes with batteries.

then I start it up and CRACK ! a big pulse goes bang ! when you turn it on .
ok is this normal . ?

then I am not very impressed with the seller because the drum pads bareley work ! arrg. i can get all the drum pads to work, but no use trying to drum on the thing. is there a way to fix these pads to make them responsive?

I dont think im gonna complain, it works, just not properly.

Ill be able to sample everything off it. sucks I cant sit down on it and make stuff though, just sample the drums.

1 more thing. ::::::

IS there a way to say put a kick on the PERC pad, cause its only the first few drum pads that dont respond good. hmm , the other ones work good enough, if I can assign drums to them, maybe i can use it for drumming.

and ohhh the roll !!!!

totally not what I expected the space flams and stuff. woo weee . this is pretty awesome, I was expecting note repeat like 606 ,555 or MPC . nope.

anway, what do you guys think, should I try and fix the drum pads and keep it , or send it back, I probably only have a couple days left to send it back. kinda bummed, and how could the dude not know the pads were bunk. bah.

check the KIT button, you will be able to change sounds per every pads...

the ROLLs are the most cool rolls i ever tried on a hardware, for DNB they're perfect...but...NO DAMN MIDI OUT  ...
