Picked one up on eBay for a good price, landed Friday, wow!! This piece is awesome, huge sound and a solid sequencer. So much to grasp but super simple to get going out of the box. Problem now is I see a Digitakt in my future.

I’m paying off my MPC 1000 at the moment. It’s going to be awhile before I get around to the Digitone. Not sure if I’m ever going to “need” the Digitakt. I feel I have too many drum machines as it is! But the Digitone can add more FM along with my DX200.

First go around with FM or any synth like this really, sounds phenomenal and preset drum sounds are insanely good. Sequencer is amazingly easy and now learning the Elektron vocabulary. I needed something a bit different and made noise, PO’s are cool but also needed some depth. Once I get me head wrapped around this box I’ll tie it to the 404 via Midi and work that out (never dealt with midi).

FM takes a bit of practice to wrap your head around, especially if you’re using 40 year old Yamaha DX7s or their siblings. (Due to that cryptic LCD screen). There are some great iPhone/iPad FM apps for a better understanding of how carriers & operators affect the tone you want to make. So you get sounds no analogue/VA synth can deliver.

Now that Elektron has done their version of FM, it’d be interesting to see how their workflow allows you to make brittle metallic sounds, to Rhodes electric pianos, to Slap bass sounds. Not too certain if old DX7 sounds can be downloaded & installed, or like that Yamaha ReFaceDX, they had to start from scratch. (Which was kinda a dumb move on Yamaha’s part, but I guess it’s because the ReFaceDX only gives you 4 operators.

If you ever get lost, there are some YouTube vids that give you a general idea of what’s FM synthesizers do. But regardless have fun with it.

Right on, good shit. Thanks. I’m more messing with functionality and preset sounds at the moment but look forward to the sound design with this.

I checked out some YouTube videos on how it sounds. And it’s probably going to put my DX200 to shame. Plus it’s sequencer isn’t likely trapped to 1 bar loops. It’s just a matter of figuring out Elektron’s learning curve to their gear.

Posted a quick jam I did last night. Not great but definitely need headphones or speakers to justify its sound.

Update, got Midi going.

What a lovely lush wall of sound this beast delivers. Got the SP playing guitar loops via the midi tracks and it's super simple yet awesome sequencer. Quick repetitive loop below with DN, SP, and guitar for reference. I was so afraid of Midi that i ignored it and wow, so easy to setup and possibilities are endless.

I’ll start by saying I’m not to swift with all this but it was surprisingly easy.

DN midi out to 404 midi in

DN:
press midi button and select syn1 or 2
Func + A knob press and select chan 1
404:
I did nothing (func + 9 will change midi channel if needed)
Banks are played via octave (Up and down arrows on DN)
Pads are played via keybed

There was a tutorial I followed in the back of the DN manual on how to midi that was really good.
