Post subject:  Roland MS-1 Card Backup

After messing around with SysEx and failing to get the MIDI bulk receive to work correctly (or at all), I decided to go a different route.

Using HDD Raw Copy Tool (freeware) you can make complete backups of your PCMCIA or CF cards that have been formatted by the MS-1.

http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/

This software lets you save your card as a single file image of the entire card, allowing you to make quick & safe backups to your computer and restore these backups to the card.

The software does NOT allow you to extract individual samples or sequence data. It makes an exact copy of the memory card to a file. You can then restore that file back on to the card.

I am in no way affiliated with HDDGuru or HDD Raw Copy Tool.

Thanks for posting this.

I've also found it's possible to clone the contents of an MS-1 formatted card using a Mac and the Terminal app.

(You'll need a USB card reader relevant to the type of memcard you're using...)

Image a card (where it mounts as disk2):

sudo dd if=/dev/disk2 of=/Users/[username]/Desktop/RolandDisk.img

(This creates a clone / backup file called "RolandDisk.img" on your desktop)

If you want to then copy the image back to a card:

sudo dd if=/Users/(username)/Desktop/RolandDisk.img of=/dev/disk2
