Just got this thing yesterday. My first MPC.

I haven't felt this dumb in a long, long time. I'm reading the manual (i'm on page 40ish of 120) and I just feel defeated. I"ve watched dozens of videos and tried just feelin my way through these problems on the actual machine, but lo...

I am asking for help from cats that are patient and don't mind holding my hand through some abc shit.

1) how do you chop your sample? Is there an MPC version of the 'mark' button? And then how do you assign your sample (or all your chops) to a pad (or pads)?

2) what's the best way to put an 8-bar sequence together?

If someone could just give me a jumpstart then I can figure it out from there, but damn this feels alien 'cause my brain is wired for SP's.

peace

god I know that feeling. Got the 4k specifically so that I'd only have one machine to learn, and it took years.

1) to chop, go to the sample screen and choose region (f3). There will be an area that says region: 1. Move to the one and hit window. Now choose how many regions (chops) you want. For each chop, you gotta dial in start and end points. Once you got your chops set, go to edit (f5) and find slice sample. Hit do it, and make sure to choose yes where it asks if you wanna create a new program. Then you can chose that program in the main screen for one of your tracks where it says part:

To save a little time, loop the sample you wanna chop up in the trm/lp screen, then go to region, set the region amount, and the chop points will be pretty much on point

2) go to the main screen and load up the tracks you plan to use. Set your sequence for two bars and start putting your drums and samples down on their own respective tracks. Where it says seq1, hit window and chose copy with f6. Copy that sequence and paste it to sequence 2 and add some variation. Do that again if you want, and then put them together in the song screen to get 8 bars.

I hope this helps some, just remember i'm not any kind of expert, just a dude fuckin around at home. I'll be glad to answer any questions in a pm if you want.

Funny thing is, i went from 4000 to 303. before I learned how to chop and sequence on the 4000, I was just looping shit and dropping loops and one shots in here and there like the way I would use resampling method on the 303. No quantize, infinite bars, etc. the self titled lp on my bandcamp is that method at work. I kinda freaked out when I got the 303 and realized it could be done quickly without programs and multis and all that ish, but By then I was also used to the many, many features of the 4k and had to use em both.

Hang in there, you will love it. The learning curve is understandable considering that it's one of the most capable hardware drum machine samplers ever made.
