Here's a trick I discovered! While a sequence is playing, hold enter/shift and tap exit. All notes will cut off simultaneously for that moment but the sequence keeps going. Drops the beat out without having to use key mutes or effects, and the coolest part is that whatever sample is next will play first, so it will isolate whatever that is for a moment, and you get a loose, stylish re-entry into the sequence that is a happy accident more often than not.

So happy to see people are still talking about the MS1! I've had mine for a couple of years now and I keep discovering new ways to use it, especially with external gear. Here's some of my favorites:

-I use an external hardware mixer, so I often pan my samples hard left or right and separate the 2 audio outputs into 2 channels on the mixer, with independent pan, eq, volume, fx sends etc. Basically turns the MS into a 2-channel sampler, and iirc the internal effects on the MS keep left and right separated.

-Also picked up a volca keys recently, and I've been controlling it with the pattern sequencer on the MS. My favorite part of this is that you can import midi sequences using the editor software, including sequences that play out of range of the MS keyboard--so for now I'm using this to send bass lines to the volca keys while I play loops on the MS (I set the the volca and keyboard channels to 2 and the global to 1, so that I can trigger loops without triggering a note on the volca. still leaves something to be desired but it works ok)

-My latest is making use of the faders on a peavey PC1600 (that I was lucky enough to inherit) to control individual sample volume, using sysex. This has completely opened things up for me in terms of being able to "mix" using loops for a sprawling live set (not that I get asked to play gigs :? but still). I forget where I found the MS sysex chart but I'd be happy to share it if anyone is interested--seems to be missing a few crucial pieces, like sample mute, but maybe someone here would be able to help me sniff it out

I really hope this thread stays alive! I kinda can't believe how much hate this super useful and SUPER CHEAP piece of kit has received, it's so nice to see people digging a little further into it.

OH also a note on sample attack... I haven't tried this but can't imagine it wouldn't work.

step 1 - create a sample, reverse it, resample it
step 2 - tweak the decay of the resample as if it were attack
step 3 - reverse again, resample.... should be exactly the same as the first sample but with "fade in" attack, no need to use the software... maybe too hard to work in reverse?

gonna try this in a sec to see if I'm dreaming

UPDATE:

just tried it, APPARENTLY decay is just nothing like attack in reverse. BUT I did get a decent result by tweaking the RELEASE of a sample in reverse. easiest to work with one-shots. so it goes like this:

1 - create sample, reverse it, resample it
2 - tweak release of resample, keeping in mind that you have to release the key where you want the top of your attack slope.
3 - resample, reverse, resample again

This technique is definitely not precise, as it depends on your ability to "play" your attack... but it's not bad if you're in a pinch or would rather not work with the software for whatever reason.

Breathing new life to this thread!

So I bought a Microsampler. It's a demon. However I am super interested in sysex control. There's a user who has done a lot of work on sysex templates in Korgforums:

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... sc&start=0

Quote:
... live looping, pad drumming, full control over samples and FX.

Watch the demo video, please: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZflhQpyBNI

The looping catch in this video - I set sampling length and pattern length both to 4 bars, sampling trigger to "note on". There is a note for the selected sample in the pattern, starting from the beginning, and its length is 4 bars too. Therefore, sampling is engaged on the pattern restart, and sample starts over immediately after recording on the next step - just like the common loopers! Precise playing would reduce clipping, but it always occurs - no workaround yet. Maximum looping length is limited to the sample length measured in beats - 8 bars. Twice more than KP3!

Almost every sample or FX parameter is controlled via corresponding SysEx message. For example:

F0 42 30 7F 41 (10) 00 15 00 (3F) 00 F7 (set decay 63 for very first sample)
F0 42 30 7F 41 50 00 10 00 (10) 00 F7 (set FX depth to 16)

Novation SL controllers are the only ones to send SysEx messages with variable bytes. One thing left - discover all the messages and create templates. I've did it for you.

http://empytree.com/files/msmidi.zip
(my templates, sysex description, including detailed for effects, and SMF looping pattern to import)

Korg uses negative variables as well in some parameters (XX 00 and YY 7F, for example), fully reproducible only with two of Novation controls.

padKontrol is used obviously - notes for drum samples, and CC#12/13 for touchpad. It outputs MIDI-out to ZeRO, which merges it with its own data, finally fed to microSampler.

I am just now watching a Novation SL mkII that I could have cheap. Only thing: Sysex is a complete mystery to me

If some of you would take a look at that zip file, would you care to comment what a man is supposed to do with those files? Dump them into the Novation and have an instant working controller? I seriously need to be taught this as if I was an infant.

Nothing new for Microsampler heads but i still love the Keygate Sampling function. Made a short video with it:

Rabot, thanks for posting all these tips and tricks. I picked up the microSAMPLER out of sheer curiosity and am learning my way around it. It's as simple or as deep as you want it to be.

I remember someone posted a beat tape of the microSAMPLER and the SP-202 working hand in hand with great results.. anyone still have it?

Yeah, man, great to see there are still MS headz out there. I still use mine regularly. Mostly for playing sounds, that got spread across the keyboard chromatically automatically lol.
For the sound and arrangement it works hand in hand with my zoom sampletrak. Although I posted an example of how the 'by default' rather clean microsampler can achieve similar lofi sound as the sampletrak. You can find details of the workflow in the description.

How to get dirty with the Korg Microsampler - Lo-Fi Ludwig Beat
https://soundcloud.com/fiba/how-to-get- ... udwig-beat

Sampling a tone to the second highest key-slot spreads it down across the keyboard... That's a killer feature.

Let's bring this thread to life again! =D
Peace
FiBa

Anyone know how he is using the Korg Mircrosampler as a Vocoder?
