I don't really like the dr5 too much. The sounds seem kind of cheesy. It seems that it was made to be an accompaniment tool for guitars for practicing their guitar playing. The dr202 seems well suited for hip hop/electronic needs. Has anyone used a dr 5 and liked it? Are there any advantages to the dr 5 over the 202?

I had both. They're different. A drum machine and a sampler.
I've sold the dr5 because i didn't liked the fact it had few sounds suitable for me.
I sold the 202 because someone hardly wanted it (on this forums) and i didn't used it too much (i use the yamaha su10). I miss the 202 filters indeed.

The dr 202 not the sampler, the drum machine is pretty cool. Lots of options for an old school drum machine. Sounds are lofi and not too digital like modern drum machines. Has a nice cutoff and decay knob for filtering and cutting the decay to tighten your drums. I just use the sounds and sample em into the 404 but what i can do to them before sampling is all you need. I like cutting the tails off snares so they snap more then adding a little reverb in the box, pitch down then sample into the 404. Pretty cheap too. If your talking about the 202 sampler, dr sample, i got nothing for you. But the dr groove is nice.

oh sorry
i have the dr202 :)
it's a cool drum machine for real time live groove sounds
it has also an ext track for controlling other midi devices
what i don't like: the iper cool ROLL/FLAM is not sent by midi (on the dr series it's sent)...

I have an sp 303 and an sp404sx. I'm thinking about getting the dr 202 so that I don't need to turn my computer on. At the moment I am mostly sampling drum sounds from reason 5's kong drum machine. I think i'm gonna get the 202. Does anyone use a dr 5?

this interested me, I used to draw out all my beats like this when I started on the 303 because had trouble understanding arrangements.
