I believe its the greatest sampler workstation ever!

-fx are all awesome and sound so realistic and natural...
-it has its own unique stereo sound...when sampling stereo its just so lush and crisp
-the sound is unbelieveable, u may think u can get this sound out of a pc or by pressing lofi on 404. But u CAN'T....it pushes the low end crunchy, distorts the highs and sprinkles its magic on top. If u lower the pitch or even raise the pitch it adds more dirt in between the lines of samples..
-its built like a tank. U really feel like its a professional piece of gear. Metal chassis and hard plastic ends. Weighs like 50lbs ...and i have to slide on by it when i enter the door. It even looks pro black with white key..simple asr10 logo and ensoniq on the back..a little cubby hole for ur disks rests on left above the recessed floppy drive.
-has a built in radiator heater for those cold studio days
-sequencer feels right...feels much better than a sp303/505, i can achieve that unquantised swing easier in like one pass. The sp felt like it put it where ever it felt was right...no, asr understands me and swing...even at 16t it swings!
-chopping by ear is much easier too...on the 303 i was frustrated when i couldnt get that deep kick without that click/pop on it. The asr chops in chunks quickly then u can get precise with the numbers and chop finely and eliminate all pop/clicks.
-Has a cool audition function which lets u hear changes before applying them.

Last thing...i find it hard to believe the asr10 was the main piece of gear for my fav album liqiud swords and even ob4cl . They too clean !...i can hear the asr's grit come thru a bit on "investigative reports". But he must done sum super eq'ing...i can plainley hear the asr on odb first album and a bit on ironman too...but the other albums lack that lofi sparkle that the asr does so well....any thoughts...?

I agree with every single word written here about the ASR-10. I'm finally getting back to making beats on it after a year away from it to focus on MIDI and other samplers.

RZA used the ASR in a very unconventional way. The way Blockhead uses it boggles my mind and amazes me. He gets the most out of it and really pushes it to the max. ProTools helps as well but he knows the ASR inside and out and dude can go from making a straight forward boom bap beat to creating a very intricate and coherent sample collage piece.

The ASR seriously allows its user to extend their creativity and put their own touch on the machine.

The ASR-X is no slouch either, Ella. It has the same sampling engine as the ASR-10. Although MIDI on the ASR-X is a bit difficult, using an external sequencer with the ASR-X is quite rewarding. And Ella is a studio wizard so I don't think he'll have a problem with this.

The only real trouble with my X is that it hasn't scsi option, apparently very difficult to find. So i basically have to work with very small samples in order to save them after on floppys....

I got my EPS-16 a while ago, it was between that or the ASR-10. I needed a 16 bit hardware sampler to add to my collection.

The ASR-10 does have more sampling time and samples in stereo.

But I chose the EPS-16 because of the variable sample rate and, to me, the FX better on the EPS-16 for some reason. (while it is the same engine as the ASR-10, the dp2/4 effects)..You can really get the EPS-16 to sound Clean to DURTY

But chopping on it is the same as the ASR and it is indeed a breeze.

Could anyone upload a sample (eg drum loop,dry/wet) to taste the sound?!

i've thought about buying an asr-10 but the rep for breaking down keeps me away. also the assignable out option is rather rare.

I can get an asrX or dps16. Both are like 150. Should I do it, which one?

Or should I just save up and get a octatrack?

I dont know to much about the dps16 or octatrack but i wouldnt buy a asr-x unless it was the pro (red) model and only if it had scsi! But $150 is a great price.

Here is the LOFI TEST

Clean Sample>ASR10(44khz)>ASR10(33khz)>SP303(LOFI MODE)>MPC60

https://www.box.com/s/7somcvlomfx8ou5bbgj5

(mpc 60 had to speed up the sample and pitch it down in the machine plus only 5 second samples so it didnt get the whole sample.)

Oh wow, that test is gnarly. The ASR takes were the nicest for sure, the 33khz distortion harmonics sound sweet. Surprisingly the 303 sounds kinda dead compared to the MPC & ASR.
