Long time reader, first time poster.
My first sp was the sp202 that I picked up along with the dr202,used it for a couple of years but sold it with some other gear for an upgrade to the hone studio. Picked up a sp505 in that process, still use it too.

Recently I picked up the 808ex off the bay and when I received it the drive wouldn't read any of the 5 zip250 discs that shipped with it.

So since I did my research and spent a lot of time on here lurking I knew the mpc 2000xl hotswapple multi card drive would work and I got one off the bay with a 1gb cf card for a cool $225.

Just got it put in yesterday and after formatting the card and putting the cf card in my usb to cf/sm reader it showed on my comps drive list but the converter (which has to be ran in win98 compatibility mode) wouldn't read any of the banks to load my samples.

Now I know the converter works because I downloaded the original zip250 demo disc from here, threw it on a renamed usb and was able to convert all the banks on it to wavs.

Then I had a moment of clarity and decided to throw the contents of the demo on the cf card and low and behold the banks showed up.

At first it gave me wav errors but I'm pretty sure it's because the layered drums I've built (from other gear I own and recorded) were in 32bit float from my fl12 bounces. So I popped them into fl's Edison vst and Reaves as 16bit mono, I assume stereo will work but I haven't tested.

Then I opened up the cf card in the converter and successfully put my samples on, popped the cf card into the 808ex while powered off, then powered up to great results.

Sounds so smooth and crisp with no drive noise, and most def will cut down on production time smoothing out the work flow.

So to summarize, thanks to all the cool cats and so heads on here.
For anybody that wants to use the cf drive setup this is what worked for me.

Hope this helps clear any confusion up the cf drives in the sp808ex and surely this can also be done on the orig sp808.

Now if only i can find the op2 board [=

Hi Sonny.

Great to see someone doing this with the SP-808 EX ! .

I've had both the EX and OG...still have the SP-808-EX which I purchased in 1999 that is no longer working unfortunately which is a bummer cause I absolutely loved that machine...maybe one day I can get it up and running again, hopefully.

Excuse my ignorance here but what's the difference between the OP 1 Expansion Board and the OP 2. that you're looking for ?

If I remember correctly op1 expansion adds scsi connection for external zip drive, two different digital i/o sets of jacks one appears to be optical while the other is rca type Jack, and individual rca stereo outs for tracks a, b, and c.

Op2 expansion also has the scsi connection, has one pair of digital i/o of the rca type (I'm not too sure about the cable type needed but the jack has an rca type colored orange) but op2 also adds xlr stereo paired 2in/2out with switchable mic/line for the xlr inputs.

My intent is to record my mic straight to the sp808ex, for short snippets or just to run it as an fx box for vocal processing. Could also use it as a more mobile way to capture live drums as well, with less in the signal chain as I can export the cf card contents to wav so simply.

My production style has steered me towards sound design and I'm building a drum library of machines I've recorded, processed and layered myself, I've got analog and digital drums but I could use some acoustic drums for layering.

Ah, ok I see the difference.

I was curious as I've got the OP 1 which I used once or twice and which I no longer have any use for but I don't believe I've even seen one of those OP 2 boards before.

Wait....wait a minute here....YOU'VE MANAGED TO GET IT WORKING WITH A CF-CARD? :D :D :D
That would be amazing!

And regarding the OP-2: I saw one here in Spain which was included with the Roland A-6 for 250€. But I use just the Mic-input, which is enough for me.

But great news regarding the CF!

Yes I was just as excited to get it working and with the converter which was the most important to me.
I skipped getting the mpc2000xl in order to pickup the 808ex and it's a bit ironic having the mpc drive in it.

Even more ironic is the fact that before I even used the cf card that came with the mpc drive in the sp808, I popped the card into my usb to cf/sm reader in hopes it would have some mpc samples I could snag and convert but sadly it was empty. Here's the ironic part, the card was previously formatted for use with an sp808 named the same as a formatted card just with no data on it.

I've seen someone suggesting, when using the cf drive and card, to sample something on the 808 first in order to get the banks to show in the converter but it appeared he had trouble with bad wav types and also trouble writing to blank pads on the converter, but I've not had a problem with importing to blank pads or since I've used 16bit mono I've not had an issue with bad wav type either. Edit: this could be because I copied the 250demo on to the card first.

Not sure if it's worth noting but the usb card reader I use is the sandisk ImageMate "dual reader for CF-SM" and the cf card I have is a sandisk 1gb.

Edit2: Also just tested a 2gb microSD in a SD adapter and it formatted to 511mb on 808ex, and can confirm it works just the same. Convertable sp to wav, vice versa, ect. Still had to toss 250 demo contents on, that seems to be key for fastest setup.

Edit 3: I didn't even think to search for it in regards to the A6. Might see if I get better results including That instead of sp808 in google.

Man! Crazy stuff! I love it!

Eventually I bought the A-6 with the OP-2. I will receive it next week.
Main intention is to create a copy of the OS to spread it others who are dreaming of converting the 808 to the A6 because of the IDE hard drive.
I will shoot some vids of it and will post them on my YT-channel.

We stay in touch!
