from p.151 in the manual: You can use a keyboard via midi to trigger samples 1-16 (a full bank) with chromatic keys C3 - D#3. It mentions nothing about using the MIDI-controllers keys to re-pitch a single sample, however you could of course pitch-shift a sample chromatically to fill the pad bank and play a tune with the keys that way... may be more 'musical' to play a 'tune' that way than by banging out on the pads, tho' that's what I do.. im no pianist.

Pitch-shift on the 808 requires a fair bit of trial and error to get a consistent sound due to the five different sample-quality grades and differing quality depending how far up or down the octave you're pitching from the source - might be better to do the pitching in a DAW and sample off that unless the 808-stretch is the sound you're after.

p.152 tells us a midi controller can play the internal Virtual Synth tho', which would be damn cool - it's pretty labour intensive to program with cursor-clicks and jog-wheel.

(btw - 100$?? That seems pretty reasonable!)
