I have the chance to cop a 303 at a decent price but I have one snag... I have heard the box is real slow (load times, etc). Is it actually slow or is it just not as fast as a computer? Kinda hard to tell what people mean by "slow" when they talk about the 303.

Danke

Ive never used a 303 but if its slower than the OG404 I would not buy it.I don't even like to wait on the OG when compared to my SX it moves like a turtle when I truncate and delete shit. But I have heard the 303 has a bad ass sound so it might be worth the extra waiting time.

Edit:also compared to a decent computer its all slow

Storage operations for a single sample take about 6 seconds. Not sure how this is affected by the length of the sample. But in my case it always feels like 5-6 seconds. Erasing both card banks is maybe something like 20 seconds. Never stored and loaded a whole set of samples since I'm always starting from scratch but I'd guess that it'd be about the same as erasing both card banks.

Haha so it doesn't sound too bad. Been watching some resampling videos to get a better idea and it seems just fine. I have an SX but not being able to resample with EXT SOURCE on is a gigantic flow killer for me, looking to remedy this.

i think it also depends on how big your sd card is. if i remember correctly smaller cards make operations a little faster. it is definitely slower then the 404.

It's worth the wait! I just received my 303 like 2 weeks ago and I love it. Very solid, yes there is a little process time (it is a vintage electronic piece) but it isn't that bad. Hope you pick one up

keep in mind that pad banks C+D process things faster than pad banks A+B as the latter ones use the internal memory while C+D use the smart media card, iirc. deleting samples on A+B takes something like twice the time as on C+D...

Word.

Yeah, I knew about the memory bank difference but thanks for the refresher. Just found out I was outbid on this particular 303... guess I should keep my eyes peeled since I already have the money set aside.

The 303 is much slower than the OG 404. If you use an 8 mb SM card the speed will increase over a 64 mb card for banks c/d. I don't need all the sample time a 64 MB card brings, and I'd much rather have the speed of an 8 MB card. I've never owned an SX, but the 303 will probably seem slow to you. Coming from a 202 it seems lightning quick. :)

The 303 is really the best way to go in my opinion in terms of older sound quality, feel of the pads, the way it forces your ear during sample chopping....it's really a great piece for an at home studio...I do everything on it and record each layer of my beat into audacity which allows me to do things live at the same time...it's much easier and faster to do it this way...making your sp more of a pad controller...no load times...only thing you have to do is get your sounds in there and that's about it...

Enjoy

having used many samplers (mpc2000xl, mpc500, sp404, zoom sampletrak) over the years, the sp303 is definately the most fun and intuitive to use! although the lack of speed of banks A+B is really a bummer sometimes... makes me start all my beats on banks C+D, main sample chops on C, drum chops on D...every time! deleting stuff on A+B is really annoying...
