hey, i've been trying to use my 303 live while dj'ing. i can't figure out if there is anyway to control the tempo of the 303 delay using the tap tempo. is this actually possible? or is it that the tap tempo can't control fx for live inputs? any help would be appreciated...!

on a sp-404 i do it like this:

set up a dummy pattern as described here:
viewtopic.php?t=1680

then, whilst this 'silent' pattern is running, the SP's effects will be tempo-synced to the pattern's BPM. use your tap tempo button to get the pattern at the tempo you want, and the effects will follow : )

what's weird is that i've tried doing that and it still doesn't respond to tap tempo.

example:
i choose pattern 1 (dummy pattern) and have it playing
i then hit pattern select
then i hit TIME/BPM
now if i adjust the bpm with the knob i can hear the delay's tempo changing,
but if i adjust the bpm with the tap tempo button the tempo changes on the screen, but it doesn't apply to the delay

i tried it with a pattern that had some drum sounds just to see if the tap tempo was indeed doing anything, and it was changing the pattern's tempo, it just wouldn't affect the delay. so if i tap in a tempo of 72 bpm the delay doesn't change at all, but if i instead use the knob to change the bpm to 72 i can then hear the difference.

do you think this is just an issue with 303?
any other way around this?

thanks for the help...!

i think it must be an issue only with the 303
tried it just then with the 404 and it switches delay BPM via the Tap Tempo button fine

you'd think they could fix that with an OS upgrade though....

yeah, but it seems like maybe i'm somehow the only person in the world who is bothered by this! i've done so many google searches and i never find any usable info or even complaints on this issue. this thread has been the most helpful thing so far so thanks for responding.

i'm really hoping that this is just user error on my part, but i'm stuck at this point. why would the tap tempo not control the fx? its gotta be something obviousing i'm messing up.

peace.

hey man
i filmed a quick video to demonstrate what i think you're talking about:

is that what you mean?

yoooooo..........THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING THE VIDEO!!!
you've been a huge help. i still can't do it on the 303 exactly the way you do it in your videos, but i FINALLY FIGURED OUT A WAY!

here's a video i made of me trying it different ways....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wncC-_ORJXQ

------------------------------------------------
in your video you do it two different ways.
------------------------------------
problem i had with the first way:
at about 27 seconds in your video you turn the pattern select off and you still use the tap tempo to control the tempo. on my 303 i can only get the tap tempo to work if pattern select and time/bpm are still selected.

problem i had with the second way:
you have pattern select and time/bpm selected and you use the tap tempo to control the fx. when i do the exact same thing on the 303 the tap tempo will make the bpm change on the screen and for patterns playing, but NOT for the fx (in my video around 20 seconds i try this method and you can see i change the tempo with tap tempo, fx don't change, i then use the knob to change to that exact same tempo but now the fx respond to it).
-----------------------------------------------

now sitting around thinking, i remembered that occasionally i've had fx not turn on even when selected. once in awhile i have to turn them off and on again to get them to work. and this is where i found my solution...

to actually use the tap tempo to control the delay i have to:

--------------------
turn the delay on
start the dummy pattern playing
-------------
hit pattern select
hit time/bpm
hit the tap tempo to set the bpm
hit pattern select
turn OFF the delay
turn ON the delay
--------------------

in actuality i only repeat the last six steps each time i want to change the tempo, but DAMN! six steps to change the tempo of the delay?? crazy. but i'm just glad it finally works. you can see me start using this method at about 1:07 in my video. im getting to the point now where its pretty quick and easy to do. but still, kinda ridiculous this is the only way to get it working! at 1:53 you can see i forget to do the last two steps ( turn the delay off and on), and the fx bpm is wrong (too slow for 200 bpm). i turn the delay off and on and all of a sudden the fx bpm is right (200 bpm) oh well. as long as it kinda works i'm happy...!

well thanks again for the video and all the help!
hopefully if anyone ever has this problem they'll stumble onto this thread.

peace!

that's sweet man, glad you've figured out a way
hopefully once you get the movements into your muscle memory the six steps will seem like nothing, become second nature
good to see your video too, i'm always interested in the different quirks of the SP range : )

peace!
