Madlib uses an Engineer for mixing/mastering.
Stones Throw posted parts of an article from a Remix Mag interview:

"Although Madlib tracked and mixed almost all of The Further Adventures of Lord Quas using only a Boss SP-303 Dr. Sample and a Roland VS-1680 digital workstation, the setup didn't always satisfy the sound he had in his head. For that, he turned to engineer Dave Cooley."

Speaking about Madlib and him using the 303. I don't understand how he pulls off most of his beats using the 303.

The 303 has no pad cut off (choke) function. He has a couple of beats that's just straight long loops. But there's also a lot of other beats with more happening. Does this dude trim each chop?! That must be the most time consuming ish ever considering his range of output.

Of course..as you said only some of the time. So he probable uses the 303 some of the time. Im sure he still uses an sp1200. Probably a 606 and an mpc too. People think because he advocates the 303 that's the only thing he uses. I guess this fullfills this "mythical aura" that people like to have about him but its likely nothing of the sort.

I reckon there has been times when he just used the 303. There's that red bull interview with him and Egon and Madlib pretty much admits to solely using the 303. Think that was a few years ago tho. He certainly uses other equipment. There's that pick of him standing round loads of vinyl with a 606 on the floor.

I think the key with Madlib is he's a mad digger so he's always sampling fresh stuff!

I really dont know if there is a "key" to anything he does beatwise. I havent been impressed with anything he has put out for a looong time. Im more impressed with persons on this forum like beatjitzu, frantic, as well as other dudes not from this forum like edk(andy easy beats). It has boggled me for years as to what all the hype about madlib is. I think its just a fad cus he is a noted 303 user, smokes a ton of weed and dresses like a modern sun ra. It has every fly by night producer thinking that all they need a 303 and a bag of green and they will be just like their mystical hero. I think more of the raw talent is hidden in plain sight on this forum.

I know what you mean. He mostly loops stuff anyway, not really complicated or anything.

He'll always be up there for his earlier stuff and his links to Dilla, but I wish he'd concentrate on quality instead of quantity. Dude releases too much stuff!

I'm a Madlib fan, he's got it down as far as finding great samples and collaging them up goes. I also see him as a music archivist (although time and money give him that freedom).
Like Preqwal says, it's mostly loops, but the way he pieces it all to together is awesome.

That said, there's a ton of stuff I don't like from him, especially his wack rapper collabs. All that Frank And Dank Freddie Gibbs thug in the club shit is horrible.

I like his strong arm steady beats and even those are mediocre(my opinion) but other than that I really dont consider him hip hop at all. Most of his recent stuff draws no emotion or energy to me whatsoever.

sure dude has the loops and stuff but if you don't think he can flip a beat proper then your dead wrong. anyway just because people jock him a little too hard sometimes doesn't mean he's not great.

to each his own, i dig the guys music

You quoted yo yo crunch in your reply and thats what my reply was in reply to hahaha. So yeah you pretty much were replying to my comment. But yeah I dont really check for his newer shit anymore I think the last thing I bought of his was that africa medicine show which was a waste of money. I listen to a lot of people I find out about on banfcamp. I just type in"sp 303" or something relatve to that and all kinds of goodies pop up. But as you stated earlier the constant jocking of him is present.
