First post....Hi

I'm Kev, I make loop based experimental/electronic music with Ableton Live and recently aquired a 303 to allow me to play live.

I have a couple of questions about the recording process. I was wondering if I have this right in my head.....

Say I record a looped guitar part, am I correct in thinking it's not possible to keep that loop playing and say, play a bass line over it recording onto another pad?

And could I effectively use the 303 as a line-in (for keyboards and guitars) + effects module which I can run through my preamp/comp/eq and then onto the computer?

you can't have a pad playing while recording onto another pad. in my experience, pattern sequencing and recording are the only two features you can't perform live very well. record a sample and use the resample to bounce it between pads. my finished loops are often the same sample resampled 3 or 4 times with different effects, then all those samples played at the same time resampled onto a single different pad.

yes! except if you want that first pad's stuff recorded on the second pad too. so like, drum on one pad, drums w/ bass on second (so you record bass while playing over drum pad to another pad), then horns over bass n drums, etc.

just wanted to point this out. i figger you'd awready know, but just saying.

Yeah, a simple resample will let you do this.

Cool...so let me get this straight, whilst resampling to a pad I can record from the mic input aswell?

*Also, after re-reading my original post I just want to make it clear that I'm not actually planning on recording samples live, just triggering them.

I just did the resampling thing whislst recording into the input, I must have missed it in the manual. I'm starting to see the potential for this little beast hehe...

Cheers for the above

I just discussed this in another post, did you know that the 404 can't perform this function? I can't figure out a way to get the EXT SOURCE audible while resampling.

Really stupid that Roland would remove that feature... Good thing I do this by a different method or I'd be *really* pissed at the 404. Especially seeing that my 303 has already bit the dust.

Stupid.

Is there another way to do this with the 404? Maybe a patch update I missed?

so this can only be done when recording through the mic input? i've only tried sampling through the rca in jack (connected to my laptop through its headphone jack) and whenever i click record it stops whatever sample is playing.

i don't seem to get it but i can't figure out how to record from the RCA input (back) or the MIC input (front) while trying to resample? with me either way, as soon as you press resample the record input is turned off...
