you can also hook em up both to a dj mixer, nothin' but drum beats on 1 & samples on 2, or what ever you want.... 8)

Midi is not always a necessity - I've done gigs with no midi (forgotten cables, had to use analogue synths, had guitar players etc) and they were fine. Sure, stuff gets outta whack occasionally, but this actually conveys more of a 'live music' feel to proceedings! 8)

Midi time sync is for new jack with no timing, if you use it in a live setting like a turntable you should be able to flip it all the way live. Just my opinion though.

i read somewhere that panda bear likes to trigger loops at slightly different bpm's so in time the sound begins to change and morph. i thought it sounded like a pretty cool idea

Well almost every comtemporary song follows a 4/4 structure or some division of it so bpm doesn't matter if you place it on a downbeat, it's just basic syncopation which is the basis for most rhythmic drum styles. I hardly ever take the time to change all the sample bpms to match in a pattern sequence. I actually used this technique on the beat I just posted, the drumloop and the sample are like 20bpms difference but it isn't noticable when placed in the rhythm.
